The people talking about people injuring themselves on the N64 controller were referring to the infamous stick rotating games in Mario Party. The goal was to rotate the analogue stick as fast as possible, and the quickest way to do that was using the palm on your hand. It tended to cause blisters and burns though, so they never used that mechanic again.

Also, some third party controllers had a metal stick with rubber padding that would wear off and some people stupidly would continue to play, rubbing them finger on a sharp piece of metal.

Strangely enough, my wife thinks that Destiny look awesome, and she asked me why I am not playig it. To be fair, however, I think the Led Zeppelin music in the Destiny ads is probably what engendered her affection.
