Dreamcast Laser Replacement

Post by Golgo 14 »

I just bought a replacement laser for my Dreamcast, but this part is a SPU-3200 rather than the R48 that I've heard about before. I looked it up and the SPU was used for the Dreamcast in later runs, but there is some disagreement about whether you can replace a R48 laser with a SPU. Does anyone here know if this should work in my old Dreamcast which currently has a R48? Thanks for any help.

Sorry. I'm not sure if you can. I was wondering if you could help me though. Where did you buy the lense from? I'm trying to find a good Dreamcast parts supplier. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks. On your lens problem though, and not to point out the obvious but, do the plugs match up? If they do, theres a good chance you'll be alright with the replacement. Hardware revisions usually change plug sizes due to energy requirement changes. Just a thought I had and I could be wrong.

I got it on ebay from these guys:

Dunno if I'd recommend them because I haven't been able to get the lens to work yet. I'm not very knowledgeable about this stuff, so I'm not sure what you mean about the plugs matching up. Could you try to explain to me? The lens does look somewhat different from the original part, but it fits in the machine just fine. I'm not very good at technical stuff, but I think I installed it properly. When the new part didn't work, I put the old one back in and it works like it used to. (It still needs to go, though!)

I thought you might have the whole laser assembly which in that case there would be a ribbon plug "I think" most drives do, not sure the Dreamcast has one though. I never had to replace the lense in mine "knock on wood". I don't see why it wouldn't work though if it fits perfectly, unless the new ones broken as well.

Judging from his detailed feedback some people bought bum lasers from him. See if they will send a replacement.

Thanks, I emailed them.

The new part was just the laser and it fit the ribbon fine. I'll post what happens with it.
