Therefore if a review goes up two days after launch I can assume from my own experience that it is highly unlikely said reviewer has had enough time to truly pass a professional judgement on the game.

"The 30-plus hours I've spent in the game so far...".

My main problem here is less that they have reviewed the game at all but rather they have rushed to slap a number on it before I feel they actually have enough information to do so.

Fair enough. If you weren't going to wait for reviews to make your decision and you're having fun, then that's all that matters.

They've been saying it's a Shared World Shooter but that's marketing guff. It's an MMO through and through. It's an underpopulated MMO outside of the hub, but it shares many of that genre's design and structural hallmarks.

Therefore if a review goes up two days after launch I can assume from my own experience that it is highly unlikely said reviewer has had enough time to truly pass a professional judgement on the game. And that's four days after launch, so I reserve the right to be suspicious of a review that was posted only two days into the games life cycle.

"The 30-plus hours I've spent in the game so far...".

...is seriously not enough to judge a game of this scale.

Just as a bit of reference I looked up some World of Warcraft reviews from a few publications I am familiar with and trust: Edge Magazine, Play and Games(TM). Now the game itself was released on 24th November 2004 but the reviews were published (in order) September 2005, April 2005 and January 2005. These are magazines that held their reviewing processes in higher esteem than simply grabbing headlines.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm needlessly arguing but I just wanted to stress that I think this sort of game cannot be reviewed in the same way you'd review a "normal" game. Imagine if the next season of Game of Thrones was judged on its first episode alone. MMO's are longform gaming and should be reviewed as such IMO.

Back to the game, my friends and I managed to peer pressure another friend into buying the game, so I started a new character (a sexy human Titan) to help him through. The frog splash is pretty cool and I like how it can be activated mid-air. Got another couple of annoyances though.

-This game needs class specific weapons to differentiate said classes more. Or maybe only the Hunter can unlock a high level sniper rifle or something like that.

-The game also needs the class armour and defence stats to be more pronounced. I'm not feeling that I can take much more punishment as a Titan than as a Warlock but I can feel that I'm slower.

-The game needs a Map badly especially when in Patrol. Having to tell a fireteam member "I'm by that bit with the rusty tanks" is quaint but not really acceptable in a half billion dollar game.

Wait, this is an MMO? I thought it was Diablo-style, with 4 people per party.

Does this mean you can do 25-man fps raids? That sounds epic.

I dunno, but I had 5 people on the mission I was doing earlier. I'm not sure how the whole online thing works with this game to be honest.

It's a hybrid of a few things obviously but there is a lot of MMO in Destiny. You've got a hub with quest givers and guild leaders, you've got overworld maps with enemies at locked levels, you've got instanced dungeons for single or squad play, you've got the colour coded gear that you need to grind PvP or event style matches to obtain, etc. Most importantly and unlike Borderlands and Diablo it's online only. That and there are dancing animations which is as important to an MMO as sweet loot and superbosses.

Compared to much larger PC MMO's like WoW or EVE, Destiny doesn't have the Massively part of the acronym down but it has the rest. I doubt we'll get 25 player raids though. :(

'Cause after 20-30 hours a reviewer is totally unable to answer the questions "Is the game any fun?" and "Is it worth picking up?"

Reminds me of a certain argument not too long ago about an RPG...

I would hesitate to call it an MMO. There is no massive amount of players in this. You only ever see a few other players with you at a time. It is more in the vein of Diablo 3 playing in a public server and the game places a limited number of other players with you.

Destiny Drinking Game (Don’t Try This At Home)

1. Drink every time your flying robot buddy has to scan something.

2. Chug if you have to fight off waves of enemies while your robot buddy is scanning.

3. Die of alcohol poisoning before you get off the Moon.

But seriously, I'm enjoying the game quite a bit. If it wasn't for all the hype, the fact it was in development for so long, cost so much to make and was made by Bungie, then I don' think the criticism would be quite so harsh.

I think if it wasn't for the hype and the fact that it was made by Bungie people would be a lot more receptive to the idea that it's a game with a lot of aspirations that doesn't quite deliver and is repetitive as hell. I mean, the hype train and Bungie is the only reason it sold a completely unjustified amount of copies. I find it hard to believe it would've sold like hot cakes if it was made by some random developer.
