Remote for TV acting up , how to fix ?

Post by s8n »

hi members , i recently opened my remote for my TV as one button wasnt super responsive.

i cleaned it with 99.8% Isopropyl Alcohol and a Pencil Rubber...........

about 24 hours later other buttons started being not so responsive , so again cleaned the PCB and 24 hours later same shit.

to turn the TV off via remote i have to press with all my power thats how bad it is

anyone know what i can do to fix this problem ?

btw when i opened the remote for the first time there was some sort of wet residue on the PCB.

maybe as i cleaned it off its not making contact like it once was

It might be that the carbon coating on the bottom of the button is wearing off and now that you cleaned it, the bits that had flaked off, but were still kind of stuck there were washed away. There is some paint on repair stuff for that, though I haven't used it myself.

Be careful with that remote. It might send a double pulse making the TV turn off then immediately back on, not good for the capacitors. If a Sony WEGA, a sure way to kill the power detection chips which have a history of failing.

hi guys all noted..............

i got to the point of ' well its f*cked lets go for broke '

i grabbed my Fibreglass Scratch Pen and lightly went over the ' carbon coating '

interestingly 3 and a half days later the remote is still working

i believe its the Isopropyl Alcohol is the culprit as i put new rubbers in my SNES controllers a couple of years ago one of the controllers went FUBAR.

all the other controllers i just used a Pencil Runner and they came out OK

it seems the Iso is doing something that the PCB or carbon coating doesnt like

Isopropyl alcohol is fine to use on the contacts on the PCB. I'm not so sure about the carbon pads though, alcohol might damage them further. As Hobie said, there's some products that you paint on to restore them, I've been meaning to try some out but haven't yet. I did try some conductive paint (for shielding) that seemed to work at first but didn't last more than a few days.

hi Ziggy................

ive used Iso on Gamecube , XBOX 360 controllers and they came out great and are still working fine.

probably from now on tho i should stick with just a Pencil Rubber for cleaning controllers

Using alcohol or electrical contact cleaner on the PCB contacts is perfectly fine, it's what you're suppose to use on it. But I'm not so sure it's safe to use on the carbon contacts on the rubber pads. Whenever I have tried cleaning them with alcohol, I always see black coming off of them. This tells me that I'm not only cleaning it, but I'm actually removing some of the conductive material.

I've cleaned several game controllers this way in the past as well, and it has worked for me too. It's funny that you mentioned newer controllers that you have cleaned. I've never had a problem cleaning newer controllers either. But I have a couple of older controllers that are becoming worn out, and I actually made one of them worse by continually cleaning the carbon contacts with alcohol.
