IPs that NEED a licensed game!

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

IPs that NEED a licensed game!

Post by Sload Soap »

After watching Kimble Justice's excellent A-Z of Licensed games Youtube series and seeing that it is possible to make a decent game from literally any property (Frankie Goes to Hollywood the game anyone?) I was inspired to make this thread, just as a bit of fun.

The basic gist is this: Name an Intellectual Property and give it a game. It can be a movie, comic book, TV show, actual book, band, whatever and the game can be in any genre you like as well.

I'd like it if we could stick with things that have never had "official" licensed games made out of them, but I'll give some leeway for IP's that have been generally treated shoddily i.e, Superman or Doctor Who. Some IP's have been done to death though: thinking Batman, X-Men, Transformers, etc so try and avoid those. And please give some reasoning, don't just name an IP and leave it at that. Dude, seriously. Don't do that. :|

(As ever if there already is a thread like this, you know what to do).

===========================================================================================================

So my picks are Wonder Woman and Red Dwarf.

I've said it before, but how Wonder Woman doesn't have her own game is beyond me. She doesn't even had a dodgy C64/ZX Spectrum beat'em up game as far as I know and everyone got one of those. Fucking Journey got a game before WW.

I would base the game on the more recent New 52 ongoing comic as far as tone goes, but still incorporate elements from her wider comics past like Cheetah and Maxwell Lord. There would be a basic plot about WW having to accomplish a Hercules style 12 labors while behind the scenes various high Greek gods like Hades, Ares and Apollo are plotting to murder Diana as they usually are.

Gameplay wise I'd avoid openworld and go more Arkham Asylum but with many more larger open spaces to accommodate flying sections and the like. Openworld tends to lean towards having the player do pointless errands so I'd have a more structured world.

On flying I would adopt Transformers: Fall of Cybertron's method of having the flying and walking be two separate schemes, toggled with a button press. That way, Diana can be both maneuverable on the ground as well as in air without those two gameplay styles being split. Obviously the flying would be a bit smoother though: WW isn't a jet like Starscream and so shouldn't move like one.

Combat would be a bit God of War inspired. WW is one of the few JLA members for whom killing is an option (in extreme circumstances) and so swords and shields would bolster her usual arsenal of magic lassoing and punches. Then you add in the flying ability and there is another layer of depth e.g, dropping in on unaware opponents, air combos and the like.

One thing I did like in Justice League Heroes was that WW had the ability to deflect ranged attacks with her bracers as long as she was facing directly at the enemy fire. Some interesting potential for comboing and for crowd control. As such I can see WW being pitted against a wide array of enemy types.

Yeah, so generally a cool God of War style action/beat em up in a Greeky myth/Superhero universe with Transformers' effortless mode changing controls. Not much to ask!. Oh, and no cameos from other DC characters. WW can stand out on her own.

Next up, Red Dwarf. For those who don't know, Red Dwarf was a beloved British Sci-fi comedy series that ran from the late 80's to 90's that was kind of Sandford and Son in space but with 100% more existential dread and Sci-fi genre jokes. And people saying smeg a lot.

There is only one gaming genre to suit the style of the show and that is a point and click adventure. Since the show was episodic in nature, I could imagine a Telltale like game series, possibly set around season 6 with the crew still trying to find the missing Dwarf and their wacky adventures along the way. Maybe one episode (level) you control Kryten trying to negotiate the safe release of the crew from a Gelf tribe or the next you are Rimmer looking for his lost Hard light beacon. Or there is a Polymorph on board and you have to deduce which of the items in your inventory it is disguised as before it eats your emotions. Simple set ups for fun adventures. I am aghast that again, there doesn't even seem to be a simple C64 game based on the show at least as far as my research could find.

And unlike the show, the actors won't get fat and old so you'll never have to scrub the imagine of a overweight Kryten from your mind. Damn you to hell, seasons 8 and 9.

You guys/gals got any ideas of your own?

Why cant cheezy, so crappy they're awesome 80's movies be made into Next gen games or even IOS/android games? Also throw in popular movies. So much to choose from.

Lots of 80's action movies were full of blood, bullets and cheezy oneliners. And other genres of 80's cinema

Perfect for videogames. Even if they arent big on content, the nostalgia factor is there. Less content, mobile game. More fleshed out story, full next gen game.

Something like this:

Image

A retro PSN game complete with queen music and pixelated 80's like graphics? Sounds like fun!

Image

A sci-fi vehicular combat game using character from this movie would be interesting.

Image

Just to see the scenes from this movie brought to gaming would make me smile.

Image

Mass Effect Jr. edition. What if they stayed in space or went back years later?

Image

Guns! killing! Explosions! One liners! Why is this not a game already?

Image

A 2d game like this with a stylized graphics/elements not unlike psychonauts would be something completely unique.

Now the only thing holding these games back from achieving their potential is licensing. Who gets what money and rights? And profits.

Such litigation!

I would love to see Telltale Games take a crack at this IP. A solid adventure starring the current Doctor would be fine, but I would love it if they made an adventure starring Tom Baker, Jon Pertwee, or Patrick Troughton. I would consider funding a kickstarter, however, for a game: (1) starring all of the different doctors; (2) each with slightly different abilities; (3) all of which are necessary to solve the game's puzzles; (4) with branching paths; and (5) wherein actions taken in the past affect events in the future (i.e., one version of the Doctor hiding a sonic screwdriver in a castle in 1685 would allow another version of the Doctor to escape from that castle in 1985).

.....

Apparently, video game publishing powerhouse Simon & Schuster released a game based on the Raymond Chandler character Philip Marlow back in 1997, but I would like to see a good game based on the character. An adventure game would be fun, but an adventure-FPS hybrid like Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay would be even better.

.....

Finally, and if I am not mistaken, we never received a video game adaptation of Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears...

I would like to see the Hellsing anime made into a video game. I could see it having a Devil May Cry feel to it, they could even use a similar control style for Alucard. Since he is immortal, when the life bar depletes, he goes to an alternate dimension, similar to Soul Reaver and complete some task to return. Some Police Girl episodes could be added to flesh it out. I think it could work

This^. I think a solid 2d side scroller would be perfect for the franchise.

This sounds like a great idea. Since the show is built around the Doctor either talking his way out of danger or having Eureka! style moments of clarity it'd have to be a adventure game. And yeah it also gives license to use any of the past Doctors and companions.

Came here and was pleasantly surprised to see that two people have already said exactly what I was thinking.
