Piranha games unfinished business

Post by DragonM »

So I play a couple games online (Mechwarrior Online and Mechwarrior Tactics)
MWT has shut down their site and I feel like I`ve wasted my hundreds of dollars toward Beta Keys for my friends and I. I do not recommend supporting this company as I just received news that they are now making a new game, without finishing the ones they already have. In MWO I decided a couple months back (maybe too late) that I wouldnt spend any money toward their games. MWO has been putting all kinds of new mechs out but we`ve all been playing the same maps for years now. The maps have become completely boring to play on and everyone and their dog knows exactly what to do and where.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Yea sorry its been saying that for almost 2 weeks now. If you read the forums on MWO's site, it tells the whole story of what happened. The dev team was "let go" from breach of contract (no updates in 8 months). Trust me I know everything there is to know about MWT because I play it and MWO regularly.

If they're gone, they're gone and there's not going to be anything you can do to get your money back. I bought collectors edition and lifetime subscription for Hellgate London and that didn't last very long. Sucks ass, but short of stealing the servers, taking over a power plant, and enslaving the employees to keep it going, if it's dead, it's dead.

On the subject of boring maps where everyone knows exactly where to go; you've clearly never been that into any competitive FPS (or RTS) scene. Maps become well known and can be optimized down to the individual skills of the players (or expose a massive balance problem).

Clearly huh.
Just to set things straight, this is an arena based game not FPS.
On another note, I was the top 3 players in the world, back in my college days, in a game called Command & Conquer Tiberiun Sun (RTS) and almost won 10k USD from Westwood Studios.
But after playing the same (8 I believe) maps for over 2 years, in MWO, I'm not the only one with complaints about this. They're finally coming out with a new map after all the complaining. Now when they repeatedly bring new mechs in with basically the same mechanics (just different names), of course players will begin to complain. But thats not even why I'm talking about this. Something as trivial as this is bottom of my list of complaints. So if you're willing to take the time to look at MWO forums in off-topic. You'll see exactly what I'm talking about for the MWT topic.

Yeah, I saw the MWT topic (I've played a fair amount of MWO and a bit of MWT). Companies fail, games fail, money is lost. The only thing that seems really scummy to me on that front is the reports that there wasn't active development on it for several months but they were still taking people's money. If I had spent money in that timeframe I'd be pissed, but I spent money back when it was actually being worked on and I see it as the risk I take when I give money for things. I've spent money on games that I thought sucked after playing them. Who knows what will happen with MWO, but I'm hoping they can finally get out Community Warfare; I'm hoping it'll be interesting enough to get me playing regularly again.

Agreed 100%
I spent the money in MWT many moons ago as well but I still hate the fact that they do this and think they can get away with it. Its not like a couple hundred bucks would make me or break me but where did the money go exactly? They've made over 5 million and say they have troubles finding developers? If our game dev team had even 1/5 of that, we would already be in alpha stage.

This is a widespread problem with "early release" style situations. You are putting money into something that isn't done. That means it is inherently risky, regardless of the promises devs make. There have been many games released that weren't ready for prime time, but historically the devs at least had the balls to pretend the game was done, even if they had to backpedal under pressure to release fixes. These days you can just release something unfinished, call it unfinished, make some promises, and then drop it years later when you find something more interesting because, well, "it just didn't work out". And somehow this is OK because you told everyone up front it was an early release and not a finished product.

So this means nothing can be done as a player, and them as a company, still producing games? What I'd like to see is an experts opinion. Someone already experienced with this sort of thing. I guess it still wont stop me from making some nasty letters to the BBB and eCommerce.
