ah yeah I missed that one. Actually it was around the Sexcorcist/Death Rap era that I stopped paying close attention to Necro. Though I always mean to get to them.

A$AP Rocky - Live.Love.A$AP - 2011 - self-released
When an album is as good as this, it's almost hard for me to articulate. And a lot of it is (of course) personal taste. But Rocky's debut - a self-released mixtape at that - is just stunning. I guess what I think is so amazing about it is that it seems to create a whole new genre, admittedly by mashing many influences together. A$AP Mob has always worn its Dipset love on its sleeve. That shines through in esoteric lyrics. But there's a far, far deeper love of all things purple that reach far further than Harlem - namely Houston. Live.Love.A$AP often feels like a chopped-n-screwed album, without the vocals slowed down. It's jarring, and beautiful, and relaxing, and soulful, and introspective, and ugly all at once. Such druggy highlights include "Whassup" with classic Clams Casino a chopped-up vocal-beat and shitty high-hats that cut out like an ameteur rocking Fruity Loops. But it's this sort of cheap-ass DIY asthetic that makes me love this album the way that I assume those that were really there for the birth of punk loved it, and knew that they were hearing something unique that would eventually be in the public domain. Elsewhere, SpaceGhostPurrp - whom Rocky would eventually grow apart from rocks a slowed down sax sample on "Keep It G" and also guest-stars on a remix of early Youtube "hit," "Purple Swag." It's a shame hearing these tracks and wishing the two could have continued their collaborations. And then you get to "Trilla," a track that is so out of place with its bouncy and slick guitar line that you realize that Rocky could rap over any beat and sound amazing - but he's just mostly focusing on the hazy shade of purple cloud rap that is the epitome of perfection in his own mind. This mixtape is incredible because it seems to be a product of such a huge amount of influences - named by Rocky himself (Kanye, Outkast, Bone Thugs...) and yet at the same time feels almost like it was created within a vaccuum where outsiders don't exist. This is a manifesto of young, hungry rappers who want to present themselves to the world as 'brand new guys,' while never for a second forgetting where they came from. A true modern day masterpiece.

Yea I think Necro definitely has some of my favorite production and he's got quite a few amazing songs. I think the last album I heard of his was Death Rap and I loved all the Manson excerpts throughout the album. That song about hitch hikers was amazing too.

Noise since I don't really pay that much attention to hip hop, well music in general, do you know if there's any word on the album Necro was doing with Kool G? Also where the hell is that Liknuts album?

I always enjoyed Necro's production on Ill Bill or Non Phixion tracks, but I can't stand his voice. He's awful live too. For some reason at Hip Hop Kemp he was booked to come on after Reflection Eternal, and half the crowd left lol. It didn't feel right to start talking about raping corpses after Talib had just dropped "The Blast".

I don't mind hearing ridiculous violence and sexual content if it's creative or funny, but Necro is kinda monotonous with his flow and delivery, to me anyway.

Was that album actually self released?

Never mind. "Self released" means something different these days.

What did self-released used to mean? Live.Love.A$AP was a mixtape that he released for free to the internet.

Jay-Z - The Blueprint
Outkast - Aquemini
Nas - Illmatic: 10th Anniversary

I hate to keep bringing up Wu-Tang, but this thread has re-invigorated my love for this group.

I was looking around on the internet for a list of official Wu albums because they have what seems like hundreds of compilations and since it's been a few years since I did a re-education on the groups releases I figured I would do it now. Apparently, I haven't missed much. It seems like they have only dropped a couple things a year (referring to the clan proper). I never knew about the Ghostface and Sheek Louch album, "Wu-Block" or U-God's "Keynote Speaker", which I skimmed through and didn't care much for. It seems U-God is not great at making his own albums. I love every verse he has dropped on everything except his own albums. His flow is great, but he isn't good at directing his own music affairs.

However, Ghost is always great. I only listened to a couple songs on Wu-Block and I was blown away. While Ghost has a few songs that may fall short here and there, he is consistently great. He is definitely the top tier of Wu members and a top emcee overall.

It seems there are members that always deliver amazing albums. Rae and Ghost being the most reliable. I love just about everything they do. I guess one could say that they are too consistent and that their work always sounds the same, but I'm ok with that. Too many members have strayed while trying to create their own sound, Method Man being the one I feel is extremely guilty of this. I haven't liked a solo album of his since Tical 2000. I LOVED both Meth & Red albums and Wu Massacre was fantastic. But, his two later solo albums weren't very good. I think he tried to be too pop for me. Meth has always been a bit funny / silly while still being gritty and raw. I hope if he ever releases Crystal Meth that it will bring back that Tical style.

I'm hoping we will see a big wave of new albums from quiet members soon. I know Rae is releasing FILA in Novemeber, but I would like to see a new RZA (The Cure, please), Method Man, hopefully there is some unreleased ODB out there, and maybe some more joint efforts like Wu Massacre.

Is there anything else that has been released in the past few years that I don't know about?

I'm getting stoked for "A Better Tomorrow" in November. I want a return to form for the group, these guys styles fit the Wu-Tang sound and don't mix well with mainstream. But it seems like guys like U-God keep trying to make a mainstream sound, but it doesn't work. We need Shoalin sound back.

Sorry about the long post.

Not free, not on the Internet.

Same concept of producing everything by yourself, "selling" it by yourself, promoting it by yourself, with the exception of the Internet.

Had to wikipedia it to see if I was out of touch. Apparently I am a bit. When I think "self released" I think about dudes selling raggedy looking tapes out of a car trunk in a parking lot.

Not knocking it at all, free music rules. It's just foreign from what I'm used to of a term that used to mean something else.

oh oh gotcha. And yeah, I'm sure it's the same. I'm sure at early shows he was selling CD-R's of Live.Love, but yeah it was a promotional tool ultimately. One that worked!

Yeah it was really good. Landed on my top 10 albums of that year.

I don't understand why Ason Unique never actually came out. It's like there was all this buzz. There was promo copies. Then... nothing. No announcement of why it was shelved or anything. Weird.
Sorry about the long post.
Don't be. This is why I like this thread!

Probably because DDMG didn't want to deal with the hassle of trying to figure out which one of his 2^12 baby mommas and kids were gonna get the money from it.
