Those are interesting numbers. Is that including handheld, mobile, and digital distribution sales?
It does. The Mega Man stats are now out of date by 5 years or so, but there also haven't been a ton of new games to dramatically change those numbers.

Yeah, it looks like the numbers Xeogred just provided are slightly more up-to-date but continue in the same trend. And that Dead Rising number doesn't surprise me. I think they count multi-platform releases as separate titles, so Dead Rising on the Xbox 360 and Dead Rising on the Wii are two different entries, and they also count mobile series and DLC like Case Zero and Case West as separate titles.

Also, I didn't know they were planning to release a Breath of Fire 6.

To be fair Megaman games cost a lot less to make. Also it's 30 million sales :P....also, 1.5 million of those are from Megaman 2 alone :(. I'm guessing Megaman 3, Wily's Revenge and X also sold well (judging by availability in the wild) and the rest just didn't do anything better than ok.

Well, it's not that surprising. I mean, think about it: did Mega Man 64 do well? Or Rockman & Forte Mirai kara no Chōsensha on the Wonderswan? Or Mega Man Soccer?

In the end... none of those games would have existed without him.

They didn't release it in Europe, so what did they expect?

Actually they probably would  . Capcom wasn't hurting for money, like Square with Final Fantasy ;)

This also makes me wonder about Nintendo's control of cartridge production and whether that might have influenced sales of certain company's games worldwide.

This is a bit misleading. Not only are those Mega Man games cheaper to produce, a lot of them existed at a time when the audience was a lot smaller, and also generally younger so thus had less disposable income.

It also doesn't distinguish between different sub series. I wonder if there is a significant sales difference between the Mega Man X franchise and the Mega Man Battle Network, Mega Man ZX, Mega Man Legends and the classic franchise.

That said, I think it's still pretty clear that Mega Man isn't the money maker it was. Frankly, even if the numbers for Mega Man there are miseleading, I'd still expect sales of the series to be pretty poor on newer releases.

Mega Man, for all the love he gets, really has never had the same kind of impact Mario and Sonic have.

How are the numbers misleading? They are simply franchise sales numbers. I'm pretty sure we all know the context.

The point was just that MM games aren't super lucrative, certainly when compared to Dead Rising games. Not spending resources on the franchise is probably a wise business decision by Capcom, not a poor one.

They're misleading because almost all of the Mega Man numbers come from a market which is incredibly different to the market the Dead Rising games were released in. I'm not convinced they're realy comparable.

That said, the fundamental point you're making is one I agree with.
