an antenna that rises high in the air, and a decoder box that supports the highest resolution in your area possible. Be sure to tune your antenna... the bunny ear ones are the gimpest... roof mounted ones are the most expensive and usually you have to be a home owner for it. There are heavy duty ones that you can place in your attic as well (or on a porch similar to mini satellite dish receivers).

As for brand... it's an antenna. I can build a high quality one out of the garbage in my backyard to tell you the truth. There isn't a lot to it.

A good HDTV antenna is the same as a good regular antenna. There's little difference except that HD signals degrade more over distance. Any antenna that says "optimized for HD" is full of bologna.

Indoor antenna's generally suck all around. I know, I have one. You have to be really close to the station to get any decent reception. The best antenna is a directional one on your roof. You can buy them and have them installed or you can make your own.

What sort of accumulation do you live in? Own your own house? Renting a unit/flat/apartment/town-house? Do you have the ability to make modifications to the place (i.e.: get a roof-mounted antenna installed)?

What's your current setup? Is there an antenna already on the house? If so, why do you want to change it? If not, ring up a few local electricians, get quotes on new installed antennas (including wall sockets near your TV), and see what suits you financially.

I used a 10' piece of thick stereo speaker wire. I inserted the wire into the hole of the of the antenna connector on the back of the TV. Presto perfect picture, works better than some antennas that cost $100.00. Just make sure that the copper of the wire don't touch the threaded part of the antenna connection on the back of the TV.

Except in the case where you were getting analog TV on VHF and now you're getting digital on UHF (actually quite common). Different wavelengths call for different antenna designs.

I had read somewhere you need both UHF and VHF capability to get proper HDTV reception, but I've not looked into it beyond that.
