Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?

Obviously I was being half sarcastic with my post, but I write this just as I've arranged for someone to pick up my Saturn tomorrow and I'm doing that thing again where I sell off the bulk of my gaming stuff and make the switch to mostly just emulation.

Perhaps it's cause I never had one as a kid, and though I've enjoyed its exclusives such as Panzer Dragoon when I have played them, but I don't have a particularly close affinity to the Saturn.

My emulation setup does include Retrolink USB Saturn controllers, and I'll be the first to admit they're not quite on par with the "real experience", but more than adequate for my requirements

The "real experience" issue is I feel not something to be ignored, but then again every individual needs to find they're own comfortable equilibrium between affordability, enjoyment and what the wife is willing to put up with. Sure, I agree the "real experience", at the end of the day, can only be had on original hardware and a CRT (if we're talking games from that particular era), but then again, I remember someone on this forum remarking jokingly that it's not the real experience unless you're throwing in actual quarters in a smokey arcade filled with screaming kids.

The important thing is just to be happy and have fun!

I guess I don't think Cave developed Dodonpachi thinking "We really want our audience to play this on Nanao monitors in Egret II cabs".

I think there concern would more be "Man, I hope people actually realize how much work and balance we put into this damn game, how tediously we placed every enemy so that chaining is always possible, but gradually harder, how crazy the loop is, that TLB, how long they can keep maximum bomb bonus, etc".

To me, that is the real experience, and that part of the game can be emulated very, very well.

Never even heard of the game and now I almost want it ha ha Though I think i'd be better off playing battle network(which imo is one of the best rpgs I've ever played and finished to a majority of extent with each game)

I absolutely LOVED the Battle Network series; 4&5 are some of my favorite RPGs of all time! There really isn't anything else quite like them: A challenging, deep combination of strategy and action RPG with loads of content.

Though 5 on ds definitely has and is still amazing(one of these days I'm going to find the other games I used to have, I still have the manual for one of the 6th sequel games if only I could find it...)

I played through the first 3 and then got bored. Couldn't stand the endless random battles and the endless corridor running. It was a nice series, but it overstayed its welcome imo.

Well then I guess me and lisa might be the odd ones out because I played all 6(and some of the others in random moments that were the extra of the sequel in a pokemon style extra version) and loved every minute of it...and still have the urge to replay them. Kinda makes me wonder if the japanese version is cheaper so maybe I could get that and play on a retron if I do find one at a decent price eventually

4 was my first, too. Even if - in a structural sense - it is the odd duck in the series, I feel it still holds up a lot better than the first 3 in terms of the battle system. Also, I agree; 5 is the best in the series. Those full-strategy segments were always lots of fun. As for 6, I felt the fusion system had become too easy to use; there was no penalty for using it in every battle, and certain fusions were way too exploitable *cough*Slashman*cough*, but it was ultimately still a decent send-off for the series.

Yeah they just need to give us a proper release for the anime part of it on dvd or even digital media for those of us that are nostaligic 5 I hated when I was younger but i grew to love it, and I couldn't find the first 3 for quite awhile...3 was amazing though, since it really worked out some kinks 1 had and fixed a few things that were wrong with 2. But 6 I loved and even bought it new....wish I still had the box or could find my manual....(I think I had the gregar version)

I've owned a cab and JAMMA boards. Its cool, and I get the appeal. But, saying someone isn't getting the real experience is false, or at least heavily depends on what you actually experience in a video game. What I find endlessly entertaining about these games, the high level play and routing, score, risk/reward, etc, all carries over to Mame just fine.

But yeah, to each their own. I probably wouldn't buy an SH3 Cave JAMMA board, because their sound is, imo, much better on a CD, and graphically the 360 ports blow the PCB out of the water. But, I wouldn't claim someone that only played the PCB, or Mame, wasn't getting the real experience.

It probably depends on the game. I'm a huge Vampire Savior nut. Emulating that game has the frame rate wildly different from the arcade version, even making certain links impossible to be consistent with because the emulation will skip the frames necessary to do it. Meanwhile, the PS3 and X360 re-releases are closer, but they still have frame delays that hold them back a little from being arcade perfect.

There's also the refresh rate of LCD vs CRT and other things that affect the feel of things.

In truth, I suspect it was a combination of some of the latter with the grand, overriding "Did we make it hard enough that most people will have to pump 100¥ coin after 100¥ coin into the machine and varied enough that they won't mind that they have to?"

Cause, really, arcade games are about making a certain amount of money. Marry flashy visuals with crunchy audio with enough challenge that you will have given the company more than their fair share by the time you can 1cc.

Opinion: I f**king love Shadow the Hedgehog. Of the entire Sonic Adventure tree of games, it's my favorite.
