I absolutely LOVED the Battle Network series; 4&5 are some of my favorite RPGs of all time! There really isn't anything else quite like them: A challenging, deep combination of strategy and action RPG with loads of content.

I did say "largely", maybe it's just personal preference, just lately I find no reason to play inferior arcade ports when I can emulate the original. Obviously this doesn't take into account the console exclusives.

NiGHTS, Magic Knight Rayearth, Panzer Dragoon Series, TryRush Deppy, Grandia, Shining Force III, Guardian Heroes, Dragon Force, Saturn Bomberman, Keio Flying Squadron 2... I think you get the idea. :P

How dare you! Sega Saturn is the best system ever.

... maybe not an unpopular gaming opinion on this particular space of the internet, but in this particular space that I actually live in, finding anyone who has even played a Saturn is damn near impossible.

Just went to another retro gaming store in my state (3 hour drive) and not a single Saturn game. Sigh.

But yeah, if you are a weeaboo like I am, Sega Saturn is great. So damn many anime based games, and a few of them are not terrible even!

Its a fair point though. That list would have been four times longer, at least, had you included shmups and fighters, and it is always one of the stronger selling points of the console. And, those games, for the most part, are far better in Mame.

Hyper Duel is worth having on the Saturn though, its console mode is my favorite version of the game.

Emulation? Insert barfing reaction gif.

Get on that JAMMA.

I mean, I'm okay with emulating to try a game out, but if I like a game enough to play it in emulators more than once, I'll track that thing down and get the real experience.

Sorry, I can't afford a Futari Black Label board, its like $1200. Ibara BL is about the same price afaik.

"The real experience" thing is BS though. I get the real experience by tearing these games apart, not by owning them.

Not familiar with those games, are they running off of PC type machines? Like the Taito X2 or something?

Because if so, then yeah, I guess there's nothing wrong with emulation. It's just that playing a JAMMA game on a PC is not at all the same as playing a JAMMA game on in a JAMMA cabinet or Supergun.

The difference might be faint at first, but going back to emu after playing on real hardware for so long is like going from Blu-ray to DVD.

I guess that's my unpopular gaming opinion, so there.

Its a Cave board, and it is JAMMA.

The differences are almost entirely graphical or musical. I can full chain Dodonpachi stages in Mame, and I can do it on the board, and have, and I can go back to Mame with no issue, because to me, the game is good because of its gameplay, and that is identical between Mame and JAMMA.

I've owned a cab and JAMMA boards. Its cool, and I get the appeal. But, saying someone isn't getting the real experience is false, or at least heavily depends on what you actually experience in a video game. What I find endlessly entertaining about these games, the high level play and routing, score, risk/reward, etc, all carries over to Mame just fine.

But yeah, to each their own. I probably wouldn't buy an SH3 Cave JAMMA board, because their sound is, imo, much better on a CD, and graphically the 360 ports blow the PCB out of the water. But, I wouldn't claim someone that only played the PCB, or Mame, wasn't getting the real experience.

I save that claim for those naysayers that refuse to play with one credit or for score
