The SNES BoF games are fine. Encounter rate is typical for a JRPG of the era.

Anyway the most annoying thing about those games is the damn item abbreviations.

I agree about the item abbreviations, and the first BoF had encounter rates that I didn't find that odd. But BoF2 has a few locales where I felt the developers went overboard, to the point I set it down. Eventually I want to go back to it, but it felt like I was in a new fight every four steps.

But I'm also debating going back to Tecmo Secret of the Stars...

Secret of the Stars is kind of fascinating from a "case study" standpoint. A good game to play for those interested in the development and history of video games. Something that I hope to see profiled on a site like HG101 in the future.

It is a bad game. Notoriously bad. But oftentimes bad games are more rewarding than the mediocre ones.

Oh it's awful. I stopped playing around the circus, which isn't that far into the game either, so I would have to continue to slog through it. But I also think it will be worth it to finally get to the end.

I beat 7th Saga, I can beat this.

To follow up on this, yes, I sat down tonight and started playing Tecmo Secret of the Stars again. I made it to the snow-covered town and raided the nearby mine for supplies but stopped short of fighting the boss. I have to get the other party there to raid for supplies and then grind my characters up a little before I want to take him on, but hopefully after that I'll have another kid for my pennon party, because while the main guy is ok, Tina is painfully weak right now.

Triple post! I don't care if they're expensive, y'all need to play more SNES.

Anyway, racing is a genre that I have largely neglected for my collection. I own Super Mario Kart and F-Zero, but nothing much outside of that. Hell, I own more flight sims than racing games for the console. I have been looking for a few SNES games lately that don't have too much of a learning curve and are easy to pick up and play. Are there other kart racers worth checking out? Or maybe some other kinds of racing games that can be learned pretty quickly by laymen of the genre? It's not one I have much experience with, but I figure I ought to learn.

I'll give you a true hidden gem, one I've never even seen mentioned here before.

Street Racer.

Seriously. Besides the racing there's also other modes. It got ported to a number of other consoles later on, but the SNES original is still the best. Plus, under $20.

Oh i plan on playing a lot more snes especially once i finally get around to getting more games and a retron(especially because i am probably going to need ips patching). My snes library is pitiful since right now on hand I only have maybe 3 or 4 games for the system(though I have to admit i haven't really searched the games out  )

edit: and if i do end up doing it in the future, are the dragon ball z games worth it? (they don't seem that bad in price on ebay and if I can ever find a in stock retron they do seem like fun)
My gameroom
My systems: NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, original gba, gba sp(001), ds lite, 3ds, vita, psp, PSone(101 model) ps2, ps3(320gb model), ps4, retron 5, and Dreamcast.

The Power Rangers Mario Kart clone I heard was fairly decent? It is somewhat cheap so.....there's that I guess. I'd like to get it myself for a good price.

There's also a Japanese one, called Battle Racers that I want to get but I don't see it often online though.

I have the first Top Gear, which is good, but it's not a Kart racer. I also have Stunt Race FX, which is just....weird.

I second Street Racer. You might also want to try out the Top Gear games (i.e., Top Gear, Top Gear 2, and Top Gear 3000). They are not kart racers, but I always thought they were a lot of fun. I also enjoyed Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing when I was younger, and it has held up pretty well. (I can't say the same thing for Stunt Race FX...) Finally, you can't go wrong with either Rock 'n Roll Racing or Super Off Road.
