Put a few hrs into Long War. Some first impressions: Wow it's hard. And I don't mean the battles are hard. I mean the game is hard. I've not made it thru the first month and I've already lost a country's support. This was before I could have had enough time to even build a satellite and uplink (time moves much slower in the Geoscape in Long War). But don't get me wrong - missions are hard as well. I was one-shot killed by a friggin' Sectoid in the second mission! I've had Drone Beams take out almost a whole squad in two turns! It's intense, but it's impressive. There's so much more to play with here.

One thing is you can get support back later in the game.

I started a new game last night, because my first one was on Easy mode and went through the tutorial, which I feel like kinda sticks you into doing certain things even if you don't want to. Much happier with the new game on Normal: got a few easily accessible steam vents, another uplink being built, no decent soldiers lost so far, leveling up more rookies, panic levels aren't out of control yet, etc. I am having a LOT of fun with this.

you are absolutely correct - there are things forced on you in the tutorial and it's totally beneficial to re-start and skip it so that you're making your own choices. To clarify, you're playing Unknown right? Not Within? They're def different games.

Yeah, Unknown. Don't wanna jump ahead in my fledgling addiction.

I've run into a couple of Long War bugs that have really bummed me out. The first was in the mission where you gotta escort that scientist guy (how do I not remember his name after I've played thru that mission so many times?). Anyway, I get him back to the extraction point... and nothing happens. The game does not register that he's there and that it should end the mission. Eventually on that mission, I just gave up and ended the mission. Even though he was in the extraction point with us... it said we lost him. Mission failed.

Now I'm in a panic mission and it's one where there's a survivor you need to escort back to extraction again. But this time when we approach him... nothing happens. It doesn't register that we're near him so the mission won't progress to the part where we have to escort him back.

This sucks, cuz it means that I'm completing missions in a game that's way too hard, but being punished as if I'm failing the missions. Ugh. I tried searching the mod's forums/FAQ's but found nothing on this bug.

That sucks, bro. If it makes you feel any better, my first Colonel is now your namesake.
