The two best (IMO) and cheapest shooters on the Saturn are Darius Gaiden and Galactic Attack (Layer Section/Gunlock). Both are VERY visually impressive 2D shooters (DG uses some 3D effects) that were released in the US by Acclaim and are, even now, still relatively affordable. And it freaks me out that this is the case.

I have to give best shooter to Hyper Duel (In the "not even close to affordable category), just because its console exclusive mode, imo, is largely better than the arcade game. So good it may as well be an exclusive.

Layer Section is god-like though, unbelievable how good that game is, and how much depth it has for what appears to be a simplistic game (This could be said for most shmups, but this game even moreso).

Not a hardcore shump fan but I have both Darius Gaiden + Galactic Attack and found them to be excellent cheap(so far...) Saturn games. Not sure what they run now but I picked up both my copies for less than $20. My only complaint is Darius has some very noticeable slow down when using the blackhole bomb(or whatever its called) but that's about it really.

Ha, most of the Saturn ones are $45+ for either version.

god, i know SNES gets namedropped a lot, but Saturn & Turbografx really took huge jumps in the last few years...i get that some of the US releases (especially late ones) were super limited, but like even common japanese stuff is climbing, ugh
