I take it in stride really. The 3DS lasted me for a time, got the XL a little over a year ago now, and then this sometime in 2015.
Yea I do want to point out that when ms or Sony are working on a new console there's always rumours about it long before hand while Nintendo usually is able to keep things under tight wraps. No one expected the 2ds announcement did they? So I do see how people are upset. It is a welcomed upgrade by some obviously. A lot of the disdain just sounds more like shock than actual anger or outrage due to perceived betrayal.
This could be a counter to the poor sales of the U as well.

It seems like most of the people in the thread already have one I'd like to hear some opinions from people that never picked one up.
Me too. Never picked up a 3DS. I tried it a few times at Target, but didn't it like it that much to buy it.
Not sure about the extra back buttons though. Seems a little much for a handheld imo.
Anyways. I'm glad it was announced. Was seriously about to buy 3DS to play some games. Think I'll just wait for this.

I don't know if this has been said in the thread yet, but people are getting a new, more powerful smartphone maybe every two years if not every year.
Dedicated handhelds like the 3DS are unavoidably competing against that, despite the advantages of the dedicated controls. I think upgrading the hardware while keeping backwards compatible with the older titles is a solid strategy (not sure it will be enough to keep a sizable market share, lets see how good are the exclusives).
It is understandable that people that already have a 3DS and particularly that waited for the XL to buy in are somewhat annoyed, but to be honest you have been playing 3DS games for a while on it and will continue to do so. You can always recoup a little bit of the buy in price by selling it 2nd hand to partially fund the new model if you think it is worth upgrading (for exclusives, possibly), and there are enough games (which will continue being made) to play on your current unit that you can wait a bit until there are lower priced new models selling 2nd hand.
Not sure why some people seem so irked by this. With all the upgrades the original DS got shouldn't be that big of a shock and from the looks of it, I think there are enough updates to warrant it. They've taken some of the major complaints I'd heard people make about the system since it launched and changed it accordingly: Bigger screen, better 3D, second analog stick, more storage. Bam! Done.
Sounds to me people are more upset at the timing of the update more than anything. Perhaps Nintendo's greatest folly here was not waiting another year or so to roll the new model out. Maybe then some people wouldn't be so pissy.
Regardless, I think it sounds promising. Especially if it can play Xenoblade. If it can play that, than that opens up the possibility of playing other Wii games and I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd be pretty stoked to be able to play Mario Galaxy on the go.
The 3DS XL was released about 2 years ago, so yes I think if they waited one more year there would be less complaining.
I think it is understandable to be annoyed if you got an XL, even though it may not be 100% rational. If you had the original 3DS it is less understandable.
And again, how many people complain when they upgrade an iPhone X to an iPhone X+1 (or to an X+2 perhaps, if they wait 2 revisions)? Same for whatever goes for Android or Windows phones. This is possibly how it is going to be now.
The comparisons both to GBC and to DSi / DSi XL are valid but of course not entirely alike - and I'm not saying just in terms of the details such as how much the new version was better than the previous one(s) and in how long it took between the releases. I really think the most important issue in comparing with the precedents is the current situation and the ubiquitous smartphone gaming.
What I want to add is that if you like handhelds and specifically Nintendo games on handhelds with dedicated controllers I think this is the sort of price you have to pay. Nintendo isn't doing wonderfully in terms of sales (although their stock price sort of stabilized after 2012, which was already post-Wii tumble in 2008/2009). It is entirely reasonable if you don't want to pay it, or to complain a bit even if you pay it (I haven't bought a Nintendo handheld since my DS Lite, although I fully intend to get a 3DS one day).
But be aware that if not enough people buy in, in the medium term there may not be the option to pay for it if it won't exist. The alternative is that Nintendo may become just a software developer down the line, and if that happens you shouldn't be surprised at some loss of quality even on their flagship titles (seemed to have happened to Sega at least?).
This may appear a bit hypocritical from me given that I'm certainly not often an early adopter, but I'm being upfront about it and I appreciate the fact that others have kept the market viable at least up to now, so that I can enter later when the price is right for me to do so.

While I agree 100% with this and I plan on buying one of these suckers sometime in the future, I have to say, if Nintendo is serious about competing with smartphones, it should get its shit together when it comes to online functionality. On the one hand the fact that this is going to have stronger harderware means we might finally get an UI that isn't painfully slow. On the other hand, multiple device accounts. If I buy another 3DS, I want to be able to download all my games there too, and preferably have them on BOTH my devices.

Well... I think some people are pissed because this, in a way, is a new handheld that will have updated games not compatible with the original 3DS, but only the New 3DS.
If it was just an upgraded model, nobody would be mad.

You all might as well wait for the NEW 3DS XL to launch because you can damn well be sure there's going to be one. Nintendo is certainly milking the 3DS for everything it's worth...and people keep buying it, so how can anyone blame them?
