Y'know, if Obama took shirtless pictures while riding a horse through a river in winter, I'd allow him to invade countries too...
I think its interesting this isn't really getting that much coverage. Same with certain other things going on. I consistently hear about ISIS, which is expected, but I've heard some stories from family and friends on the border (I know it doesn't really count, anecdotal evidence) and I'm wondering about everything going on down there. Everything going on with the immigrants and where they are going to end up right now, along with stories I've heard suggesting that ISIS or similar groups might be using the border to get into the US really make me wonder about the situation over there. Sadly, when I do find info on everything going on out there, its either false or sensationalized.

I think you can add 75% of the Russian death toll of WW2 on Stalin's list since his tactics were so stupid. Say what you will about Hitler, but at least he knew how to conquer things.Ack wrote:Actually that's a tough one to quantify since they were both involved in the eastern front of WWII. Whose body count do you put that on?ZeroAX wrote: Now if you're talking about total number of dead people, yeah they are probably on par.
And his death wasn't near as cool as Rasputin's. Most brutally awesome death in Russia ever.

So Ukraine wants to join NATO. I want to ask, how do the American members of this forum feel about that? It mainly concerns you since America is pretty much the boss of NATO.
I feel this is pathetic. Russia is a regional power and the EU should have stood up against it, we don't need uncle sam for our own neighborhood. This is Hitler and Czechoslovakia all over again. Merkel is a female Chamberlain (har har the irony).

My guess a lot of it stems back to the fact that the long history of Europe consists of "fuck the other guy", and the one time they tried something else and actually cared about another country getting invaded they got World War I.ZeroAX wrote:I feel this is pathetic. They didn't actually care in WWI there was just a lot of build up and many military alliances signed way back which brought everyone into the war either they wanted or not.MrPopo wrote: My guess a lot of it stems back to the fact that the long history of Europe consists of "fuck the other guy", and the one time they tried something else and actually cared about another country getting invaded they got World War I.
WW2 was more of a case of actually caring, but only after the Germans had already occupied 2 countries and were getting started on their 3rd.

I wouldn't say WWI or WWII were necessarily about countries caring about the other country, but managing to see down the line they were going to get in trouble eventually so better stop things while they could.
That and colonialist interests overseas (the war wasn't just about Europe) etc etc.

Wasn't it you guys who were pulled into one of those 2 wars by a 5+ century old alliance agreement?Ivo wrote:I wouldn't say WWI or WWII were necessarily about countries caring about the other country, but managing to see down the line they were going to get in trouble eventually so better stop things while they could.

There was a very old alliance between England and Portugal. I'm not sure Portugal wouldn't join anyway though.

I confess my misplaced optimism that the crisis would have ended at Crimea.Ack wrote:So who here didn't see the Russian invasion coming?
