I'm gonna be running a tourney for MK8 at an upcoming convention.

Is there a Nintendo community consensus on the best format for an MK racing tourney? Any resources out there for offline tourney formats?

I was thinking randomized 4 player heats up to 64 players, top 1(2) progress each heat- 1 progresses to next winners round, (1 to losers round in a double elim scenario), randomized stages, keep whittling it down to a final 4 (2 winners and 2 from losers in double elim, if a loser side racer wins, they reset bracket and next winner wins it all) and have winner take all?

Am I off base on my imagined structure?

Just throwing down Red Letter Media's take on Mario Kart 8 through their show, Previously Recorded.

What do you guys think? I am more of a Jack than a Rich Evans kind of person where it is all about having fun. These two guys are very much on the opposite spectrum of what a game is at times and I tend to really get it from Jack's perspective, being a pretty good Mario Kart player who also is ok with blue shells, since they aren't the be all end all of the series.

Seems Mario Kart will be getting some interesting looking DLC. Nintendo, doing DLC.

Biggest news is that Link and the Villager from Animal Crossing will be joining the cast! Along with the Smash Bros leaks, Ninty are really keeping everyone on their toes at the moment. Or, being cynical, I could say they are mining nostalgia to generate hype. Either way we're one step closer to Smash Kart. Wooo!

Link.

I saw this coming from a mile away, since Nintendo had stated that the Amiibos would be compatible with Mario Kart. I think that is part and parcel with that, as we know that Villager and Link will be getting Amiibo figurines.

I keep forgetting about Amiibo. There is a crossed wire in my head where I picture Sony's Aibo whenever it gets mentioned. I then nod sagely and move on with my day.

It's still pretty cool if that is the case. Busting out say, Samus, on Royal Raceway would be amazing. I still do want a Smash Kart though, if only because Sonic Transformed proved all those disparate styles could work well together. And for the nostalgia kick.

The coolest thing about that DLC is that between the two packs it will yield 16 new Mario Kart 8 courses to play!

Pack 1

There's a TriForce cup, The Blue Falcon (and three other carts)

If we look closer

We can make out three of the new tracks: What looks like Mute City from F-Zero, What looks like Excitebike, and the Wario's Gold Mine track from Mario Kart Wii.

The other cup is Yoshi based. (You get different colored Yoshi and Shyguy's for buying in advance, to note)

Pack 2

Animal Crossing Leaf cup and a Cat Bell cup (Mario 3D World inspired levels?)

Looking closer again:

You can see the Animal Crossing track, it seems like just someone's town, and a new track that looks a bit like Maple Treeway.

Another four karts for that pack, I imagine they'll be giving more hints later.

For $11.99, this is quite a bit of content.

Just give me one good arena and I can stop having to bring Mario Kart 64 out. One good arena.

I have to say, if they're putting in F-Zero and Zelda stuff in, it almost feels mandatory that they also put in Star Fox stuff. Maybe that Arwing that Fox and Falco modified to race in F-Zero tournaments.
