noise, good pick on Leflour, timeless classic. head nods for days off that track. Since you're a fan, have you had a listen to bahamadia's Spontenaity? Same beat, but her voice and flow somehow tops HS (as if that was even possible right?) Check it out here:
Good pick on ODB's Return to the 36 Chambers. God I love that album. You've probably listened to it before as the connoisseur of hip hop you are, but in case you haven't, buckle up, cause you're in for a treat. Snakes is my fav track off that album. RZA goes HAM on that track.

Haha yeah I bought Return to 36 the day it came out. Just re-buying so many classics these dayz to "replace" digital copies.
"Snakes" is by far my fav on there. Amazing beat, amazing verses.
I will check out that Bahamadia. I really only heard the singles from her first album, plus "Da Jawn" cuz The Roots were on there.

I was inspired to beef up my physical collection again due to reading this thread. But, the market around here is cooler than a polar bear's toenails. I can't find anything but horrible 90's pop and country.

Same here. I thought maybe half of it was alright.noiseredux wrote:Haha yeah I bought Return to 36 the day it came out.
My Father let me play it on his stereo, as he did with all the tapes I bought, and I kid you not about halfway through the first side he said "Well. He's definitely no Method Man".
I mostly remember ODB for "Like it Raw", "Brooklyn Zoo", and giving Carson Daily a grill.
Re: Hip Hop/Rap Fanatics Unite!
well, you have a hella cool dad Luke. My tape wouldn't have even made it thru my parents front door. if it wasn't led zep or journey, he wasn't havin' any part of it. If he only knew...
out of curiosity, what was the half you thought was alright?

My family has always kept their ears open. They didn't care for most of the stuff I listened to in High School (although my Father did love some Primus and Helmet), but they'd let me play any new tape or cd on their living room stereo.alexis524 wrote:well, you have a hella cool dad Luke. Music was always being played in my house, since I was a kid. Could be Kraftwerk, could be Billy Joel, Dick Hyman, Bach, Beethoven, Tina Turner, Willie Nelson, or The Flashdance soundtrack. They'd give anything a try.
I liked the first five or six tracks, although "Hit 'em high" isn't really that good. To me Return sounded like an album that was made just to make an album. It didn't really have a "personality" to me at least, as most solo Wu albums had.
Re: Hip Hop/Rap Fanatics Unite!
that's the only way to be, since variety is the spice of life.
I kinda get what you're saying as to the lack of personality. I felt that each solo release from Wu came with it's own persona. Ghostface had Tony Starks, RZA had Bobby Digital, etc. etc. Maybe there were too many personalities to ODB to fit all on one release as he wasn't the most stable out of the group?? It's all good tho since he was and is integral to the collective that is the Wu-Tang Clan.

I think I know what you mean, but I also disagree. If anything I think it was full of personality. Where we had gotten ODB in smaller doses on Enter, he's just out of control here. I feel like it really highlights his all-over-the-place-ness. I mean "Sweet Sugar Pie" precedes "Snakes." It's crazy.Luke wrote: It didn't really have a "personality" to me at least, as most solo Wu albums had.
But I'll express better formed thoughts on the album in a bit...
Re: Hip Hop/Rap Fanatics Unite!
I feel like Nigga Please does what you're talking about, but even more so—to the point where it's a stream-of-consciousness, cocaine-induced, off-beat rant half the time. Return is a better album, but this record is bizarre outsider art like Wesley Willis or a Syd Barrett album or something.noiseredux wrote:I think I know what you mean, but I also disagree.
