I wonder if there's a handyman in Germany who advertises himself as "Hamburger Hilfer".

Please tell me you know that there is a man with the last name Fiddler, who is a roofer, and named his company "Fiddler Roofing".

How the obvious escaped him tortures me.

Alright. Beginning of my last double before a month off and Dragoncon. One double today, 2 more standard shifts, and off I go!

Hmm, the company has begun buy outs for older workers with a decade or more experience to help try and drop the number of layoffs they are expecting. I'm not too worried about my department being hit, as we're small and recently showed our SVP that we're entirely self-sufficient in offsetting costs, but we'll know more tomorrow.

Thanks. It sounds like my department will be ok in general, and the bloodletting is more focused on the networks and older folks close to retirement. My big project for the year has been pushed back entirely to next year, so I'm a bit bummed, and our day-to-day analyst work(which I always have the highest numbers) isn't as important as some of the other stuff the department is doing.

That said, my analyst work also gets the most use of my department and is now being used both domestically and in two of our international regions. I also have better connections than most of the department and have a Senior VP who likes me, so that's a good sign. And my boss sat down with me and said that SVP has some plans he wants me in on, so I may have an expanded role in the coming months. It may require my hours to change a little, which doesn't thrill me, but we'll see what happens.

Is anyone here going to be watching the FIBA (basketball FIFA) World Cup?

I have the impression that it's something that most people in the US (ironic since they have the best team in the world most of the time) and most of Western Europe don't care about, but it's pretty popular in other countries (Greece, Spain, Italy, Serbia, Baltics, Russia, Turkey). I'm going to be watching it and I was wondering if there's enough interest to make a thread to discuss about it.

NPR reported on the benefits of dragoncon. Nearly billions of dollars for local business because of the event. Cool stuff.

So I just tried out those Bose noise cancelling headphones in a store, and I wish I hadn't. I wasn't even shopping for headphones. I just saw the display of headphones and popped a pair on my head. As soon as I placed them on my ears, all the background chatter in the store stopped. It was actually amazing. They also sounded pretty darn good. I would have impulsed bought them, but they were $300. I wish they weren't so much money because now I want a pair of them.
