What sets that one apart from Digital Devil Saga?

From what I understand Nocturne is considered the third main game?

The two DDS games are really their own thing in their own world, insofar as plot is concerned. The DDS games do use the same engine as Nocturne, but the combat mechanics were altered a bit. The DDS games, as well as the Persona games, are not supposed to be nearly as challenging as Nocturne is, from all that I've read. Although I own both DDS games, I have not played them yet, so I can't tell you much more than that.

And yes, Nocturne is considered the legit third game in the primary Shin Megami Tensei series. It has amazing production values and was a big deal at the time.

One big difference about DDS is that it does not feature any demon fusing. Instead, you have a set party, similar to more traditional JRPGS. There is still a good amount of customization within the game's system, though, so its far from simple, and it does still use the press system.

I thought the game was pretty tough. I think there were at least 6 bosses in the first dungeon, and I wandered around in there for quite some time.

The game's focus more on story than atmosphere like Nocturne does, but they still give off that vibe.

Its not quite Nocturne-level quality, but I still quite enjoyed the games.

They all look pretty cool to me, since they seem a bit dark/sci-fi I guess? I'll have to check them out sometime. They've always interested me more than Persona.

Digital Devil Saga is cool, but it can be almost unbearable to play because the random encounter rate is exceedingly high. On more than one occasion I was just trying to save at a save point just on the other side of the screen and I faced half a dozen battles on my way there and lost my progress. But aside from that incredibly frustrating aspect of the game, it is a great JRPG with lots of style.

and that right there is probably my only pet peeve with rpg's, high encounters in combination with no saving unless at a save point(at least the save points work decently in m&l sss)

Ready for an unpopular opinion?

The best Megami Tensei game is Revelations: The Demon Slayer.
