Shades of Metroid, Mark of the Ninja, James Bond, and third person shooters

weren't you just complaining about recycled game ideas in new "retro-style" games?

I wouldn't say the way it mixes those various elements I mentioned together is unoriginal. Shovel Knight is unoriginal. It's not the same, not in my view anyway

reviews of this are pretty bad (lots of 4-6/10). Too bad, it looks nice in screenshots!

I'm playing it right now, and yeah, it kind of sucks. It's supposed to be a stealth game, but it's so horribly designed that stealth is just impossible most of the time. The designers pride themselves on the game's randomly generated levels, but it's not much to brag about when 90% of those randomly generated levels are horribly designed.

Four words:

Mark of the Ninja

The quality of that game is the bar for 2d stealth games, and Counterspy falls well below it

Genre mixing can be a good thing, but the constant cover based shooter areas in this game are damn annoying. I just want a goddamn stealth game! Why must EVERY GODDAMN GAME ON THE MARKET HAVE SHOOTER ELEMENTS!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I was thinking of picking it up for the PS4, as there is not that much to play, but the $20 asking price in AUS turned me off pretty quickly.

Shovel Knight's execution was flawless. I think it is an overstatement to simply label it as unoriginal, but even if everything in that game actually has been done before in one way or another, it's all done so well and is so fun to play, it's hard to care if it's influences are clearly showing.

I don't think it's fun to play at all, but that's how I feel about everything I play lately. I'm beyond jaded at this point

Maybe a hiatus to focus on other interests is in order.
