I don't get how people (not calling out anyone in the thread just in general) can hate on stuff like Sonic 3 & Knuckles and love stuff like Donkey Kong Country.

For the post Genesis Sonic games you don't have to be into furry porn, you could also be a child. Kids still love Sonic. That's why Sega keeps making them. Any adult having serious discussions on Sonic's storyline however...

I also like Dynasty Warriors, there's nothing wrong with Dynasty Warriors it's simple beat'em-up-ish fun. Simple horde-slaying, gameplay focused fun is right up my alley though. Earth Defense Force 2025 is my de-facto game of the year even though it came out in February.

There probably doesn't need to be like seventy Dynasty Warrior games though.

You should meet my friend Jacob. He hates Sonic because he is a raging Nintendo fanboy. This is of course why I will wear my Sonic shirt the next time I see him.

I love Sonic. I think its lame that people look at the first Mario game under a magnifying glass, looking at how masterful its mechanics were (and they certainly were), but refuse to do so with Sonic.

Play SMB, and then play Sonic 1... and then consider which game felt like you were doing more. Now consider how many buttons you were using to do that. Yeah, only one button, Sonic manages to crash through so many excellent areas, with fluid gameplay, and only one button is used.

And this allowed the creators to craft the levels around Sonic himself. The game is about speed, and in the first game there is so much you can do to gain speed, but you do have to earn it. Springs and loops are what most people would see, and then you might realize you have 3 different jump heights at your disposal, but this game is so much more sophisticated than that. When you start trying to go fast, like reaaly fast, you find things like speed-cap, and when to apply it and not apply it, or slopes, and how they affect your vector additions. You realize the game actually WANTS you to jump at pixel-perfect locations to get extra speed (Spring Yard Zone proves this, as they line up rings in a way that begs you to try to jump to get them, and if you jump right at the perfect moment, you are flung straight to the end of the stage. I think its act 2 fwiw).

Its just crazy how deep the game gets, considering how light it feels when you first pick it up. Sure, its not the greatest video game ever, but I never even hear people discuss stuff like this, even though I often hear how Mario is the perfection of platformer controls.

and thats just Sonic 1, the basic, no spindash, no tails version that even half the Sonic fans don't like.

Chili Dogs man... Chili Dogs

I respect Sonic games, I like the music, and I like the look of it. I just dont enjoy the gameplay. I play the first level and usually quit playing it halfway through. Just meh to me. I am not a big Mario fan either, though I think I had more enjoyment out of Mario 2 and 3 than Sonic. This is also coming from someone who doesnt like these types of platformers. I like games such as Contra and Ninja Gaiden, so maybe I just prefer run n guns or more fighting type platformers.

You'll probably dig this video and its followups. It's obviously done from the perspective of a Sonic fan but he's pretty objective in taking the game apart.

Nah, no shame in this. I also do not particularly care for platformers. I consider Mario 2 to be the best of those games and have yet to find a Sonic game I really enjoy playing. That doesn't mean I think they're bad games, they're just not for me.

Sonic games (the original ones) fall into the "pretty damn good but not exemplary" category for me. They're fun as hell to play, but all have glaring flaws. They pale in comparison to something like Mario 3, Mario World, or DKC.

Hey man, thanks for sharing this! I quite enjoyed it. :)

I think Sonic is so, so much better than Mario World. World gets a hit for nostalgia, but I think its design is horrid. Just Sonic 1 lays it to shame, comparing it to 2 or 3&K would just be mean.

Its better than 3D Blast though, I'll give it that

I am in this boat too. I adore 2D platformers, and while I think that some of the early Sonic games are very good, I think their gameplay and mechanics pale in comparison to SMB, SMB2, SMB3, SMW, etc. (I am not a huge DKC fan.) IMO, the Sonic games are like the LittleBigPlanet games of their time. Very fun and very, very stylish, but not terribly deep or engaging from a gameplay perspective.

I might be with dunpeal2064 on this one, but I'm not sure. The Sonic games sit next to Megaman for me when it comes to games I replay often, since they're pretty much a one session run and never that long. So I've probably replayed Sonic games more than Mario.

I've been having a blast with my Mario marathon this year though, it's been so long since I hit them up. I never have much to say about SMB1 though, but I was 3-4 when SMB3 came out so kind of grew up with that one too anyways.

I really love the aethestics and cool unique look of the old 2D Sonic's. Mario gets a bit copy/pastey, but the amount of content in SMB3 or World compared to any Sonic... they just feel like much bigger games with more put into them. A massive Sonic with an overworld and all that probably would have been awesome.

Music though? Sonic blows Mario away I'd say.
