Unfortunately the 3D Ys games have some occasional wonky controls. Ys VI is particularly annoying in certain parts.

As far as this wind jump/glide goes, try to hit the jump and magic buttons at the exact same time. Alternatively (I think this works best when the magic is leveled with emeralds) hold the magic button until the magic is "charged" (you'll hear a little clink noise). Then release the magic button at the same time you jump.

Slowly working my way through Oath. Playing about an hour per day. In the snowy Elderm Mountains now. Love the music here.

You could also head back to town to buy new equipment or upgrade your current stuff.

Grinding always makes a ton of difference in Ys games too. I think I was level 18 at that point.

You can do it!!!

Thanks for the encouragement Dave. Finally got him but it took me like 30 tries. Kinda embarrassing. I felt like I had decent gear and a decent level (15). Should I have grinded more?

It might have helped. I was level 17 when I fought that boss.

I also haven't played at all since then, but that's another story.

Anyway, he took me four or five attempts to beat, but it was an issue of staying out of his way. I still took plenty of hits, but he only damaged me heavily when I got too aggressive, so I'd say the levels made a difference.

Glad you beat him.

15 seems low to me. Though I'm the type who always likes to over-grind a bit. This is one of those games where, for the most part, you should kill every single enemy you come across. And then roam around and take down some more enemies. As a general rule, in most of the Ys games it's unwise to fight any boss until the normal enemies in the area become really easy to defeat.

It's too bad you aren't playing the Steam version. You get an achievement if you get killed by any one boss a certain number of times. 8)

I'm in the ice caves now, about to fight the boss there. I can't quite remember what/who it is as I haven't played this in a few years.

One weird thing with Ys that I noticed, one level can make a huge difference. At 15 the boss might tear into you, only to find he takes 3 hits and dies like a wimp at 16.

Granted, I've only played the Turbo games, not sure if this applies elsewhere, but it was one of the things I disliked about Ys. The bosses are either insanely difficult to the point of being nearly unfair, or they just fold over, with 1 level being the difference. A sweet-spot level where the fight feels really balanced would have been appreciated, and grinding one more level would have let you face-stomp the boss if you wish.

I'm at the Elderm Mountains. Had some trouble against the Harpies, so I went back in town, bought new armor, and had no problems this time around.

Yeah this is definitely noticeable in the Genesis Ys III (and probably would be in the SNES version too, but it's so easy to level up to the max early in the game).

I was fighting one dragon boss in the lava zone before I was ready. He could kill me in three hits and, judging by his life bar, I would have to hit him about 50 times. I left the battle, leveled up a couple of times, then went back. This time he went down in... 3 hits. And he could barely damage me.

Ys: The Vanished Omens is even nastier about this. The first boss is virtually impossible unless you're level 5, and the infamous bat boss is untouchable unless your stats are maxed out. Of course you fight that boss halfway through the game, which makes XP completely pointless afterwards.
