Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I have an unpopular opinion to share. There is no genre that sucks, just individual games.
Also, I like being happy about games.

No, no, no.
Come have a seat over here, let us gripe about resolutions, frame rates, and release schedules.

Oh man....a few days before the Wii U came out, some gaming website did a 24 hour stream of all the games coming out for the system and all they could do was complain about the frame rate. "Oh this is clearly running at around..oh... 55 frames per second. Clearly Nintendo needs to get their shit together, because this is unacceptable in this day and age."Exhuminator wrote:What the hell is wrong with you man?!BogusMeatFactory wrote:Also, I like being happy about games.

Oh man. Xbox One is a COMPLETE FAILURE because it has games running at 30 FPS. Someone call the doctor cause I have a case of the vapors!

Honest question from someone who's not very sensitive to all of the FPS stuff.
Why is it whenever a video game is UNDER 60 fps people freak out.
But if a movie is OVER 24 fps people freak out (especially in an era where film usage is no longer a consideration)?

What are soaps at? I suspect much higher framerates, since they look awkward.
I do think that is a funny argument. The only thing I can say, is that N64 era stuff is a bit hard to go back to for me because of the framerate. Stuff like Goldeneye, etc, can be a little disorienting now. But 30FPS is completely fine for me. I still haven't really played much on my PC or made the next gen jump yet, so I'm sure I'll adjust... but it's definitely weird when I've seen my friends playing stuff at 60FPS.

Because we have used 24 frames for almost 100 years, and the jump from 24 to 30 frames can be jarring. Despite that being only a 6 frame difference, most peoples persistence of vision gets screwed up.Gunstar Green wrote:But if a movie is OVER 24 fps people freak out (especially in an era where film usage is no longer a consideration)?
But I think you wanted me to say that even though technology has moved on, the film industry is set in their ways. Kinda like how the soundman still says "Speed" when he is ready to shoot, even though they havent used reels for over a decade.

The higher frame rate means a faster speed of movement on film and needs to be digitally slowed to match with the audio. You get more frames of motion, but there are huge distortion issues and moments where things just don't seem right. Not to mention that some people seem to be affected by the higher frame rate with motion sickness and disorientation somehow.Gunstar Green wrote:Honest question from someone who's not very sensitive to all of the FPS stuff.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that you actually control what's on the screen on a videogame and the lower the framerate, the mushier and less responsive the game becomes. If you have played bad platformers or fighters you'll probably know a lot of examples of attacks or jumps that feel "off" or sluggish despite the actual delay being surprisingly small.Gunstar Green wrote:Honest question from someone who's not very sensitive to all of the FPS stuff.

I'm sure there are many games in which you can try this, there's a marked difference in how a game feels, trust me. But just think about lag, the play experience is completely differnt for 60 ping than for 90.
And when it comes down to it, if a game isn't designed for 60fps, it's designed for 30. Which in practice means you'll run at 12fps everytime there's a fight. Awful.
As far as movie go, different speed also gives you a different feel. If you compare television with a classic film and then older silent films this is very apparent.

I'm cool with this. But then I also believe that even the worst game ever made has something redeeming about it. Even The Ring: Terror's Realm has a couple of cool ideas.BogusMeatFactory wrote:I have an unpopular opinion to share. There is no genre that sucks, just individual games.
I think a lot of it is time. You have to dedicate a lot of time to a JRPG, making them feel like a chore to play through at times. I actually stopped playing JRPGs for about nearly a decade, before finally starting up again about two years ago, and I find I appreciate the break I took, but there are a lot of RPGs out there worth checking out. That said, a lot of them have similarities in the story that can make the genre repetitive, and due to cultural differences I find them more alienating now than I used to.marurun wrote:I don't know about suck, necessarily, but as I get older I find it much harder to get into JRPGs.3DSStrider wrote:Also, JRPGs suck.
