Wut? Have you complained multiple times on the Hyperkin Facebook page about the R5 not reading your repro carts? That's the type of behavior I'm referring to.

I love Super Famicom translations. Played through 10 or so myself. But I would never in a million years expect a clone console to boot unofficial carts properly.
Nah you know me, I dont get on things and bitch about small things. But, if that was to be my only way of playing SNES carts, and had several repros, it would cause me to consider not buying it.
I get your point but why would someone have several repros and nothing to play them on before they bought the Retron 5?

Well for many, they are using the R5 to replace multiple consoles on a newer TV set up. I did this as well. But, I also have a retro game room with a CRT, so I still have original hardware in there. But I have heard several accounts of people just on here looking to box and store original hardware so they can have an all in one box.

I agree with Gunstar, I look at the ability to play reproductions as a bonus more than anything. I have watched with each successive update, more and more of my reproductions work. Dragon Quest 1&2, Terranigma, Rendering Ranger, Clock Tower, all went from not recognized to working perfectly. I never expected these to work but I'm glad they do and it's becoming closer all the time to replacing my original hardware.

That's because you, Gunstar and others who think that way aren't selfish thieving crybabies with inappropriate demands. Let's not even gray area this stuff, bootlegs being lied about as reproductions are just warez in a pretty plastic shell. The fact that the tech even wants to bother to look at trying to support many of them says much about their willingness to favor the gamer despite what the trolls crapping all over the thing want people to think with their vocal minority online abuse of facebook and elsewhere.

For what really matters, it running what was created in the period and purely released in their markets the compatibility has shot through the roof since the buggy 1.0 launch firmware. A heap of bugs have been squashed and a ton of added features have been put in. They are looking to add in add-on accessories as they can be, and being done would depend on that thing being in their hands to investigate it, add, and test it. Things like the power pad, arkanoid controller and more they want to add, but need the parts, and the things they do have were added. Did you know the SNES mouse can control the entire GUI of the system taking the controller entirely out of the mix? It has done this since launch.

After reading over some of this thread, I'm seriously considering picking a Retron 5 up on eBay, where the going rate seems to be about $200.

I've been seriously collecting Game Boy Advance games for a little while now and have been wanting to expand out into NES and maybe a bit of SNES and Genesis, and this would be a lot more wife-friendly than adding four or five authentic consoles to my entertainment center. I currently play most of my retro games via emulation but would like to move in a more legit, collector-y direction. I currently don't have any of the systems in the Retron-5 apart from several GBAs.

That said, I'm pretty concerned about the save corruption issues that some folks have mentioned. Is that really, truly resolved after the recent updates, or is there still a risk of losing saves stored on cartridges? That's the kind of thing that would frustrate me to no end.

Also, for someone who didn't pre-order, is it worth waiting for prices to settle back down to MSRP, or should I hunt eBay for a marked up console?

Only save issues I noticed were before I updated.

Update the thing as soon as it's out of the box. Before you insert a cart.

Keep in mind that even though this will serve as a nice substitute for authentic consoles, you'll still likely want the original controllers.

I wish I could tell you to wait until prices start to come down, but it's hard to tell when that will happen. Maybe check out some stores near you first - perhaps a gaming shop or FYE will have one.

I second what bones there said. Use a real controller, or at least compromise and get a first party SNES controller or the licensed ascii third party controller (they made the super advantage too) which is of great quality and doubles awesome for NES and GBA. And of course don't pay more than retail, it's possible. The save issues with 1.6 and later (the 2.0b1 I shared) have it fixed.

Yeah, check your FYE's near you if there are any. I know there were multiple locations within an hour or 2 drive from me that had them.

Books A Million actually had some in stock online a few weeks back looks like they have taken the product page down on their site now though :P. If you have a physical store nearby it might be worth checking.
