Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
Sorry dude, but smacking your kid across the face is quite literally considered physical abuse these days. I don't advocate any form of violence as punishment, not that I'm saying "spanking" (as in an open slap to the rear, not a lock in a sock) shouldn't be a parent's choice to make. I have found that a very effective form of consequence is to deprive my children of things they love (such as their video games and netflix). Both of my boys do actually thank me for things like making them dinner and taking them places, even renewing the netflix subscription. I also thank them for doing things around the house, not that I would tolerate the complete lack of respect in being called a "twat". You see respect can be earned and taught by example rather than lawfully demanded by brute force.mjmjr25 wrote:We have different definitions of physical abuse.
Did you thank your parents every time they turned the heat on or drove you to school? What a great world it would be if we all did that, but most of us don't. Since we are not living in utopia here on Earth, let's prepare him for this world, eh? Getting a free roof after high school in exchange for chores is a pretty good deal and should come without insults and disrespect.
In general, I agree that the comment was quite ungrateful and disrespectful. I think it is best to be mindful that you only have one side of the story though. Perhaps his dad should have demonstrated or taught some better manners and then he wouldn't have his son calling him a twat on the internet. All that said, I assume we are talking about a "legal adult" here in which case, be happy to have parents that are willing to keep a roof over your head when you are old enough to take care of yourself. Assuming you don't want to be a complete slob, you would be doing these "chores" anyway in your very own home that you pay for.
EDIT: Yep missed this...
So, I'm not sure it doesn't still count as abuse. It is legal to throw your grown son out on the street, but it isn't legal to pop him in the face. Call it domestic abuse, assault, etc...it is still true regardless of age. I agree with much of what you said, just not that bit.mjmjr25 wrote:I'll leave this.
We're talking about a grown adult insulting another grown adult - whom is living with the other adult rent free. By your own definition you just linked, popo, calling him a "twat" is also abuse. to speak insultingly, harshly, and unjustly to or about; revile; malign

Totally agree. I actually insisted my kids attend college locally since there are more then enough to select from all driving distance to the house. No worries about rent, expense of a student dorm or anything. They pitch in a bit on chores and daughter has part time job to build up job history. Working on son who just started college to get part time job as well. I have classic cars lined up for them, will turn over registration once they graduate college.mjmjr25 wrote:Getting a free roof after high school in exchange for chores is a pretty good deal and should come without insults and disrespect.
Any adult living at home with parents should pitch in and definitely get at least a part time job. Your parents won't be around forever and do you really want to start in the job field when you are thirty?

It is. But that wasn't what you were talking about; you were talking about a parent popping their kid in the mouth.mjmjr25 wrote:I'll leave this.

My father slapped me a total of 0 times. He never had reason to because I would never have called him anything remotely close to that. Let's not be irrational and turn this into anything more than it is.
This isn't a 5yo, a 10yo, or even a 15yo --- this is a grown adult, living rent free, calling his father a "twat". Equating it to saying child abuse is acceptable is just silly and no one is defending that.

I am siding with mjmjr25 on this one. My wife and I love our children deeply. If, however, when they are fully grown, they are still living with us and call one or the other of us a "twat", I would question how I raised them, and they would very, very quickly learn how to live independently.mjmjr25 wrote:This isn't a 5yo, a 10yo, or even a 15yo --- this is a grown adult, living rent free, calling his father a "twat". If you are talking to me, I wasn't equating it to saying "child abuse is acceptable". I'm just saying you can't go around just smacking anyone, whether or not you feel they deserve it. It is against the law in all forms. I agree the comment about his dad was out of line. My original comment was made without knowing if he was an adult as well, hence the edit.mjmjr25 wrote:My father slapped me a total of 0 times. That may be so, but I am pretty sure that they aren't going to crank up the wheels of justice if you slap someone in the face for calling you a "twat".jp1 wrote:I'm just saying you can't go around just smacking anyone, whether or not you feel they deserve it. It is against the law in all forms.

Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
No, actually I wasn't. You're changing my words. I said "slap" which has an entirely different significance than a "pop" or a punch. A "pop" or punch is out of anger and generally intended to inflict physical pain and harm. A slap is a intended to show the utmost disapproval in one's actions. ...and let's be clear, Fragems is an adult. The counterarguments keep using the word "kid" or "child". We are still someone's children...but we are not children.MrPopo wrote:It is. It does sound funny when put like that. However, in my county they will throw your ass in jail for exactly that. I have seen it happen if you substitute "twat" for another more colorful word.prfsnl_gmr wrote:That may be so, but I am pretty sure that they aren't going to crank up the wheels of justice if you slap someone in the face for calling you a "twat".jp1 wrote:I'm just saying you can't go around just smacking anyone, whether or not you feel they deserve it.
