Yeah, I have an XL, so I suppose that's the case. That little shimmer effect really bothered me and I was so annoyed that there seemed to be no way to actually turn the 3D -fully- off before I figured out the problem.

Yeah, that's half the reason I wanted to keep it at 2D. Other half being that the 3D looks awkward imo and more of a distraction than anything. Plus for some odd reason it makes it hard for me to focus on the image whenever the 3D is turned on even slightly, like my mind isn't sure which layer of the 3D it should be paying attention to.
I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.

I think certain games work really well with the 3D; Super Mario 3D land sticks out in particular. With many others it ends up being more gimmicky than anything and is not worth the battery consumption.

Even with 3D Land, I found myself doing what I do with every 3DS game. I start a game and turn on 3D. Say to myself "huh that's kinda okay". Then I turn it off and go on my merry way.
Older. Not wiser.

I mostly play in 3D but occasionally I just need a break from it.

Or if it just doesn't add much or looks bad I turn it off. Shinobi is a lot of fun for instance, but the 3D is not great.

The 3D for the first year was a fun thing for me, but the longer I went into playing the less I've used it because most games don't use it wisely so it's just a tacked on effect I could care less if it were there or not so it comes down to my mood.

I think a lot of games have gone this way too thanks to the 2DS because it lacks the effect so they don't want to make moments where it really is kind of needed like the 3D isometric style rooms in Mario 3D Land with hidden coins/switches. I often just leave it off which I guess is sad, but I don't need it as much as the games don't want to use it well. For certain games where it's a real benefit to feel out distance and depth around objects (Pilotwings, racers) I find it far more useful. What surprises me is that there isn't a pile of FPS games for this thing like the DS and even more so the GBA got. I think the depth would be pretty fun in a DOOM/Quake or some other style game. Imagine if they did some side set of missions (like the sidestory Call of Duty DS games to their console counterparts) for the 3DS based off the new Wolfenstein.

The 3D just makes my eyes tired. If the 2DS screen was the same size as the XL, that'd be my go-to handheld.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I think it makes a lot of people at the least a little tired if not in the minority going into head aches and strain. It basically fakes an effect almost like you were crossing your eyes a bit to cause a double image for depth. Anyone knows who can cross their eyes the longer you hold it, it eventually wears your eyes out and tires them out, and that's just spacing out, not trying to focus on a fast moving game.
