Thank you; I never hear anyone but me giving Alex Kidd flack for this. I think most Master System fans are either forgiving of it for an early release or hold it up on a pedestal the same way I do Super Mario Bros.

At least the answers don't change randomly (or do they, I don't think I have gotten that far). I can actually live with that, after the initial annoyance. I like that game very much, but I play it like I don't have any other modern resource.

One of these days I'll break down and rake more drastic measures to beat them.

The answers to the sphinx's questions are random. However, if you get it wrong you just fight him like a normal boss, and he's perfectly beatable.

The Jankenpon bosses in Miracle World are dumb, but as I've said, there are a ton of ways to easily deal with them, both because they're not entirely random, and because you can get an item to help with most of them.

The Jankenpon in Enchanted Castle can bite me though. Entirely random, and its even in the shops. Why would I risk a life any time I want one of the items? Screw that.

Enchanted Castle is probably the Alex Kidd game most people are familiar with since it was the Genesis title and has strangely been included on compilations like Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.

Either Sega is proud of it for some reason or they really want us to understand why Alex Kidd failed miserably as a mascot.

It just plain sucks.

It is supposedly beatable. I loved it as a kid. I'd spend hours playing it at night and really got to know the mechanics. I was always so interested back then to find out what the dragon was for...turns out you never do find out...this videogame was the LOST of it's day. All about the journey.

I loved the way when you equipped new gear your character changed appearance. That's a feature I love to this day in games, not just roguelikes.

I purchased the Brain Games Colour just to replay it again and actually have come close to beating it but the later levels are hell...even if you have a super lucky run!

I'd like to play the SMS version some day. I hear it has a few differences.

Have you played Fatal Labyrinth for Mega Drive/Genesis? It's pretty similar.

Yes, I have it on Steam and the Xbox compilation. I didn't like it as much probably due to the nostalgia thing but I also preferred the surreal design and outdoor setting of Dragon Crystal. I think that Dragon Crystal is actually the pseudo-sequel which is odd given that it came out on the weaker platform.

Yes, I have that one in my collection too. It doesn't get as much playtime, for some reason. It's still charming in it's own way, but not as enjoyable for me.
I think I'm gonna' Game Genie that one next time I fire it up.

After 18 pages I missed the boat on this thread.

I just want to say I was a SEGA kid before I was a Nintendo one. I got my first Master System in 1988, after much begging. I was VERY lucky because I had a rich uncle who would give me his games after he beat them. I actually had Phantasy Star as a 9 year old in 1988. The game blew my mind and also ruined JRPGs for me until many years later when the SNES started getting its classics. I also had the Zillion inspired Light Phaser and LOVED playing Safari Hunt with it. Also had the 3D glasses which actually worked extremely well with Zaxxon 3D. There were so many fantastic games I loved back then... Shinobi, Fantasy Zone II, Wonder Boy... Aztec Adventure, the list goes on.

It was a double edged sword though because NOBODY else around me had a Master System, everybody had a NES. I had no one to trade games with or to even share experiences with about what I was playing. I finally caved in 1990 and asked for a NES. And although I had tons of fun with my NES, I always thought technically it didn't match up at all with what I had experienced on the Master System. The graphics and audio always seemed a step down from what I was used to.

We all have our underdog heroes, and I can't objectively prove it, but for me the Master System will always be the ultimate hidden gem. It's so tragically under appreciated even to this day by the gaming masses. I'm just as bitter about its fate today as I was a quarter century ago. Oh well, if I could go back in time I wouldn't change a thing. I would always choose to have had the Master System first.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Sheesh, I've got to stop making assumptions based off my limited playthroughs of games.

You know, I think I relied a lot on friends and magazines back in the 90's for tidbits on game secrets and tactics for NES games. I must be experiencing what it would have been like without the help.

Thanks for setting it straight though. I'm still more forgiving of Wonderboy in Monsterland because the base game is quite fun and you are not cheated out of a good boss experience.

Yeah, I'm betting on the 2nd reason.
