I feel like some are better and some are worse. Rastan is one of the better examples. The PSG music for that game is kind of earsplitting.

It'd be nice to have an option to choose though I gather this is low priority for Hyperkin and honestly I'm pleased the FM is there at all.
I am curious which sound Wonder Boy 3 would have. From what I have read there is FM synth in the cart but it won't work with a FM modded Master System. It must also be the Japan region to make the FM sound work. So I am curious if it would have PSG on the U.S. region and FM on the Japanese region?

Also how many of you have tried the fast boot up patch? I am a bit leery of bricking my console. However the version 2 firmware works great for me, no issues.

It won't. I've had it a good month now and shared it between 3 messageboards for a time, 2 now, where I would PM people the link since I was asked not to publicly link it then. I was told by the tech that it's not buggy but that warning on it is just the legal dept wanting to cover their butts basically in case something happens that could cause it (power outage, bad file copy to the SD card from PC, etc.)

For Wonder Boy 3, the Retron 5 auto detects the region as Japanese for some reason and the title comes up Monster World 2. It shows the US title of Wonder Boy 3 if you set it to US.

I don't know why, but it doesn't make a difference. Both versions still play the PSG music.

So I heard someone mention (it may have been on this thread) about "built in cheats"? Not that I'm interested in using them all the time (nothing wrong with people who do, of course) but how do they work exactly? Do you have to turn them on/off?

The whole reason I'm asking is because I'm wanting to play and beat the entire Ninja Gaiden trilogy (NES versions). The first one is done, and I'm currently playing the second one. However, I never did play the third one but a few of my friends have told me before about the brutal difficulty of the game. Mainly due to Limited saves and no password system.

I could shell out the money (don't wanna) and get the SNES Ninja Gaiden trilogy, as I've heard NG3 has the password/unlimited saves in place on this version; OR get the Famicom version. But since I don't speak Japanese, I won't understand the cut scenes/story.

Is there anyway to use the "built in cheats/game genie" on the NG3 NES cart? If so, how?

Download the cheat database here: http://retron5.in/node/6

Put it on an SD card and insert it into your Retron 5.

Then when you put in a game just go to "Game Menu" and select cheats. You can toggle on or off whatever cheats you want. That's all there is to it.

US Ninja Gaiden 3 is also a pain because they jacked up the amount of damage you take. The story isn't all that fantastic anyway.

Thanks Gunstar.

Also, are the cheats just general cheats (i.e. invincibility) or game specific?

EDIT: I guess they would be specific since you're downloading for a database.

And don't forget - you can abuse the save states on Retron 5 as well. That may be all you need.
Gunstar Green wrote:Yeah, I can report no problems at all with the PBC. That's how I've been digging into Golvellius since I can save instead of remembering the horrid passwords.
Oh wow. I was mainly planning on using save states for my carts that have dead/questionable batteries. Never considered using it for those long ass password games. Maybe I'll jump back into Golvellius as well.

Yup it's very useful for crappy password games. It will save a lot of loss and headache for fans of Faxanadu and River City Ransom where they were some of the very worst.

Is there any sort of feature on this device that let's you play PAL 50hz games in 60hz mode?

I can see on funstock's website some mention of "speed up or slow down your game" but I'm not sure if this is what it is referring to.

I believe there's an option to force it into either mode. I think the default setting is matched by the region of whatever the game or region you set it on.
