Re: Today is the 25th Anniversary of the Megadrive/Genesis!!
My life with Sega goes way back to 1991. My buddy wanted my new with my games for his Genesis. It was a borrow for over a month or so but me playing sonic 1 and streets of rage and shinobi all night was awesome.
Forward to 1993. I wanted a Genesis so bad and I got my first credit card and went straight to toys r us and got a model 2 with sonic 2 and WWF royal rumble. I was hooked and even got Sega visions.
For over 20 years I always traded my Genesis for a SNES or other systems and somehow that system comes back to me.
Even though I have a small library of 70 plus games its all I ever play now. I would love to get games complete but having games in those cartridge cases are cool too.
I love the Genesis. I love getting these games I never played. My purchase today was power rangers for 3.00

My experience with the Genesis has been brief, but I do have some highlights.
Realize that the original 8/14/89 launch was limited to a few cities before it was rolled out nationwide. Being from the New York area, I was able to witness the test launch of the NES in October of '85 and this as well. I was also participating in focus/research groups for marketing purposes (best way to make cash in your young days!) and I was able to be in a research panel in November of 1989 where kids my age watched commercials for the Sega Genesis as well as the TG-16 (Blazing Lazers!) I knew of the Master System, but where I was from, everyone had an NES (I didn't get mine until Christmas of '89).
My brief exposures to the Genesis through the early 90s came from Toys R Us (Altered Beast), the local recreation center (Sonic & X-Men), and other peoples houses (Golden Axe, Truxton, the NHL series, etc.) I got a SNES within a week of the launch in 1991. I was a Nintendo fanboy up until the Dreamcast, pretty much.
I've been playing Genesis titles on various Sega-made compilations ever since. Now with my Retron 5, I am pleased to say that I am finally truly able to collect for it.
I am going through the new book Console Wars which describes the struggle and the situations Sega and its new Genesis had to endure to break into the Nintendo-dominated industry. It's really a good read if you want to know more.
As a side note, one of the marketing panels I was on in early 1995 possibly shaped what came to be known as the puzzle game Zoop. I wrote a little bit more about that in the TR thread for that game.

Re: Today is the 25th Anniversary of the Megadrive/Genesis!!
Growing up, I had the SNES. So as for the eternal console war of SNES vs Genesis, I'll always be partial to the SNES. But even back then, I always liked playing the Genesis. I had multiple cousins and friends that owned the Genesis back then, and I always seized the opportunity to play Sonic. It wasn't until the model 3 was released that I got a Genesis of my own.
I can remember when the Genesis 3 was released. Or at least, when I got mine. I saw it advertised in a Toys R Us flyer for $20 IIRC, and games for like $10 or $15 each. I had some birthday money or whatever, so I got myself the model 3 along with Sonic Classics 3-in-1 (Sonic 1, 2, and Mean Bean Machine) and Sonic 3. Up until that point, I've never even knew of Sonic 3.
A friend gave me a loose Sonic and Knuckles cart. I knew that you could play Sonic 2 in it and play as Knuckles in Sonic 2. I always thought that plugging Sonic 3 into it had the same effect. I didn't know until about a year ago that it became "Sonic 3 & Knuckles" and was both games strung together to make one massive game.
Another friend game me Mortal Kombat 1. I've had the blood code memorized since back in grade school. Since the SNES version was heavily censored, it was awesome getting this version.
While in a Toys R Us, I randomly spotted some dusty old games on the bottom of a shelf. One of them was a sealed copy of Castlevania Bloodlines for $20. Total score!
I've always liked the console, but outside of these few games I never explored the console much. I realized this recently and decided I have to do something about it.

The Sega Genesis was the first console that I remember us getting. Our collection consisted of Quackshot, Paperboy, Altered Beast, Sonic the Hedgehog, Flicky, and Taz-mania. I still have our original hi-definition graphics model one connected to the Sega CD, which I also have fond memories of, and very few games for. It's a lovely little tank of a system.
Happy Birthday Genesis!

I hated the Genesis when I was a kid. Wasn't until I was an adult and picked one up as a curiosity that I realized I had really missed out. I used to think the SNES was my 2nd fave 16-bitter with the Genesis as 3rd, but now the SNES and Genny are swapped.
