@Zing

You seriously consider PS2 forgotten era? I feel like its pretty recent. I bet there are many people out there with backlogs for this console. They released a game for it this year, Fifa 14 I believe?

@G4vi

Why would a developer build a 1080i or 720p game for a console that outputs basically SD picture, not to mention that most people in that era didn't own an HDTV. Heck, 2 years into the 360's lifetime, most people still didn't own an HDTV.

Most developers didn't build for it, it was more of added features in the end that the developers had extra time for. Idk why to build it in other than future proofing and supporting the people that had new tvs.

To me I would say yes. But I also believe its on the verge so it is a close call. It just had so many games with that old school charm that we love. But I know for a fact that the PS2 will be considered retro soon.

Every time this thread gets bumped, I start to think that it's more and more reasonable to call the PS2 retro. I think that I had earlier asserted that 15 years from launch makes a console retro.
examples:
Atari 2600 became retro in 1992
NES became retro in 2000.
Genesis became retro in 2004.
Super Nintendo became retro in 2006.
Playstation became retro in 2010.
You get the idea.
By that logic, next March we can safely call the PS2 retro. I acknowledge there are a number of different opinions on this--including some debate regarding the definition of "retro"-- but this is my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I've read a post or two on here that calls some PS3 games as "classic games". Perhaps they meant "instant classic".

I'd hope so since ps3 is nowhere near being retro and won't for at least another 10 years in my opinion...(unless we're talking early-ps3 games maybe?)

Playing Silent Hill 2 again. On the same 16-year-old CRT I used the first time. Picture is a bit squigly, and the interlacing is more flickery than I remember, but the game still looks pretty good.

Fantastic game, one of the defining titles in the horror genre.

I think in the case of Silent Hill, a murkier picture (literally, TV wise etc) enhances the experience.

Yes, I think that the PS2 (as well as Gamecube and Xbox) are retro systems. While many people don't have fun nostalgic feelings of those 6th Gen systems like for N64, SNES, Genesis, etc., I'm pretty sure a lot of us will in like 10 years from now. How I determine if a system is "retro" is if I can't go in any store and buy that system brand new. You can't find PS2's brand new at Walmart. Can't find Gamecube's at Target brand new. And you sure as hell can't find brand new Xbox's at Best Buy. That's my $0.02 at least.
