1UP sold, EGM definitely shutting down

Jeremy Parish is confirmed to still be on board.
While it isn't terribly surprising that cutbacks were made, it seems that the purchasing company is greatly diminishing the value of its acquisition.
It may be gaining traffic in the short-term, but I don't think it will be a good long-term value.

I wishing I would have kept all my Retronauts episodes on my hard drive. iTunes only has about six episodes. I'm going to check 1up to see if they still have all of them. I'm going to snag them all since they're all evergreen anyway.

I believe that my brother and I are up to date on all of the retronauts podcasts ('cept two), I'll have to ask him. In anycase, if you are missing any, send me a PM and I'll upload them for you. :)

Supposively it was Ziff Davis people that fired the staff before the swap over took place. Oh and retronauts will supposively continue...and the peasants rejoice. Retronauts is the only 1UP podcast that I actively listen to, with the exception of the suggested 1UP Yours and so forth that my brother throws at me.

I loved episode 9 about game music. Parish spliced cuts of music throughout as they talked. Hearing it was like traveling back in time...

Perhaps, but 1UP had been bleeding money for the longest time from what I can gather. It offered so much high-quality content like the 1UP Show for FREE. Ad revenues aren't what they were a few years back, so there was almost zero return on it.

Anyway, many now ex-1UPers released a new Podcast today, recording in the Chuff's house. Ryan and Matt were there and have expressed a wish to continue the 1UP Show in some form but on a paid-for subscription basis, that being the only way it could ever be financially viable. I shall be eagerly handing over my money for that when they are ready.

Back in the 80's-90's, I read EGM as frequently as possible. I usually picked up the newest issue when grocery shopping with my mom. Other than working at a video game store, I haven't bought and read an issue in almost 10 years. Times do change. Does anyone remember those crossword puzzle contests, I can't remember if it was EGM or Gamespot, were you competed to win a collection of gamer prizes. I entered that so often. I would get far, but never won. Anyone else remeber those?

EGM use to be great but last few years has been mediocre at best. I'm glad someone finally put this ''has been'' magazine out if it's suffering. I see Game Pro going out of the physical magazine industry within a year or two. This is a problem that has been in the magazine news paper industry for a few years now. the new way of thinking is why pay for something you can get online free. Also by enlarge Americans dislike having to read what they can watch and hear, it's simple and requires less work of the brain to watch the nightly news then it does to pick up a news paper and read the same stories.

Digital media is the future and i dislike it.

I cannot comment on EGM, as I only read a digital copy in my Uni library to try and get a critical opinion on MGS2 (wasn't a really usable one - they are enthusiast, afterall, not academic). Thankfully EDGE is still going strong, and with the academic edge (oh! ho! ho!) in its writing I never regret buying an issue.

Long live print, and all that!

Thinking about ponying for an EDGE subscription. Been thinking about that for a while but now I think I'll take the plunge.

Next month's issue -- which was completed and will be released on 1UP, but will not come to life in print -- would have been the mag's 20th anniversary issue. SF4 is on the cover. As someone said on NeoGAF, anyone who grew up reading EGM in the early and mid 1990s will appreciate the significance of having Street Fighter on the final cover of the mag.

Seriously? Sigh. Why didnt they tell me that when I subscribed to it a couple weeks back? Theyre just going to take my money and say 'screw you'? Not cool.

By the way, to people who say it sucks, I have no idea :) I don't really listen to reviews. I just like having something in my hand to read about video games. The internet is nice but its hard to take it into my 'office' with me, if you know what I mean :)

Anyway, I need to go get my money back...
