That said, I just hate puzzles. Which is why I can't do OoT, or... yeah, anything with a puzzle in it besides Portal. If I don't solve it within a few minutes, I'm done. I get no satisfaction from taking longer than a few minutes to solve such things in a video game - it just leads to needless frustration for me.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
First person shooters are not my cup of tea. Ironically, I really like arcade-style light gun shooters (ie: house of the dead). My brother doesn't understand this at all. He sees no difference between the two genres.
There's a number of factors for me:
Slight motion sickness - this is actually worse when I'm watching my brother play Fallout or Skyrim. He insists on playing in first person mode. In fact, if he sees someone else playing Skyrim in third person, he'll say, "you're doing it wrong," take the controller, and put the game into first person.
Narrow field of view - how can I possibly see someone sneaking up on me? In fact, I can't even see the guy right next to me unless I back way up. I can't count the number of times that an enemy was killing me by standing right next to me and hacking at me with an ax or just biting me to death. My character is a walking arsenal, but I can't kill the club-wielding enemy because he's too close to see.
Controls - This is the worst offender. I HATE trying to play one of these games with a controller. I always need to reverse the axis just to walk around. Frankly, a mouse isn't much better. I don't know why FPS gamers love the mouse and keyboard so much. Saying, "a mouse is more accurate than a controller," is like saying, "a shotgun is more accurate than a landmine." They both kinda stink for accuracy. I'm no big fan of WASD controls for walking either. How awkward is that? Trackball has an acceptable level of accuracy. The wiimote is the only control option I haven't hated for FPS gaming.
Timeliness - I don't sit down to play a game for hours at a time. I often only have thirty or forty-five minutes to play. If a game can't deliver a fun play experience in that time, I'll never enjoy it.
Content - How can I say this? I'm frankly not a big fan of guns in general. A video game needs to have a better selling point that "you can shoot guns" to get my dollars. That's not to say I'm deeply offended by guns or violence in video games; it's just not enough for me.
Style - Realism is over-rated. Give me a game with a touch of style. Video gaming is an audio-visual experience. If I wanted to see real life, I'd go outside. I also need to see some bright colors. So many FPS games rely on a color palette of grays, browns, and beige.
Now, I know that's a lot of (seemingly petty) complaints. There's a few people here who are reading this right now with rolled eyes. I guess if I could design a perfect FPS for me, it would be something like...Bioshock infinite compressed down into less than one hour with the wiimote or trackball for aiming and a joystick to walk.

First off, I would never roll my eyes at you. People rag on the Wii Remote all the time for it's motion controls and I love them, so I can't fault you for that.samsonlonghair wrote:First person shooters are not my cup of tea. Why a mouse is preferred by people who play FPS games is that the sensitivity is based solely on your movements. You can whip around and have a more pinpoint accuracy as the cursor is essentially your hand. I don't blame your brother on the Skyrim argument. It needs to be in first person, especially if you are doing magic or ranged weapons, because there is no way you can make accurate shots in third person. The Third person perspective can be done for traveling and talking to people in the cities.
I think the problem, again is that you aren't playing the right games to fit your needs. There are a ton of strange games that really evoke a sense of wonder and use colors and settings in fun and fantastical ways. I would recommend games like ZenoClash or Antichamber as they really are a much more diverse visual stylings. ZenoClash is a much more fantastical and deranged setting with a larger focus on melee combat and Antichamber is a mindfuck puzzle game that is really really interesting.
With the argument about the narrow field of view, that is kind of the point of many FPS games. It is about immersion and getting into the setting. I wouldn't say every FPS has that in mind, but some use that lack of view in cool and interesting ways and help enhance the experience.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Yeah, this is unfortunate, and it sounds like it is anything in first person that bothers you. Only once in my life can I say I have gotten slight motion sickness from a game, and it was one where I could switch between cars and walking, and for some reason the resolution changed when I got out of the vehicle.samsonlonghair wrote:Slight motion sickness
Two things: most FPS on PC give you the ability to change your field of view(though it may take some work in Notepad), so you can see a wider array of things around you(multi-monitor setups are also possible). And second, in most FPS enemies make noises, so if you pay attention, you'll know they are there. And high sensitivity lets you whip about on the fly. Situational awareness is key to success in FPS.samsonlonghair wrote:Narrow field of view
A mouse allows for a much higher level of sensitivity for turns, so you can easily whip around or track moving targets as they strafe or run for cover. I don't know of any FPS fans on PC who don't immediately bulk up their sensitivity when playing so they have an easier time turning quickly and taking aim. There is no shame in using a trackball though. I know some folks who are fans.samsonlonghair wrote:Controls - This is the worst offender. I HATE trying to play one of these games with a controller. As for WASD, it makes sense when you realize why it was emphasized: ease of access to a variety of buttons around it, allowing more buttons to be assigned to things such as inventories, maps, grenades, opening doors and interacting with objects, ducking, jumping, running, melee attacks, switching between weapons in the fly and so on. It's also a better setup than the control keys because most folks use their mouse right-handed. We used to use the arrow keys for movement with the right hand, with the left hand centering around Ctrl for shooting, but that provided a much more limited selection of buttons to use, and the Windows key placement was a killer. I had this same issue with WASD when I first started using it back in the mid-90s or so, in games like MechWarrior. I used to think "We played games with only two buttons in my day!" Now I see there is a lot more variety and interactivity that can be pulled off with such a control scheme. It also helps that three of your fingers are sitting on home keys(ASD).
So you want something that throws you in the action almost immediately and can be played on the fly? Why not look into the more run-and-gun style of Serious Sam, Painkiller, or Rise of the Triad? They start fast and offer levels that can either be gotten through quickly or allow you to save so you can get through short stints as necessary.samsonlonghair wrote:Timeliness
Yeah, we shoot guns a lot. But there are types of experiences: do you want frantic, fast-paced action where you have hordes of enemies raining on top of you and all you can do is mow them down in a frenzy and circle strafe, hoping somehow you manage to annihilate everything that moves before something claws your eyeballs out of your face? Would you prefer something slow-paced and plodding, where you have to observe from far away all of the horrors and dangers you may be facing before stealthily making your way through a minefield of physical anomalies, hideous monstrosities, or bloodthirsty bandits? Would you prefer to throw yourself out of an airplane and pray to God no Nazi snipes you out of the air as you land in a city in Northern Italy that must be liberated through a series of objectives in an open-world environment, or storm the beachhead at Omaha, or cross the Volga River into Stalingrad while seeing the men around you strafed by airplanes and machine gun fire or shot in the back for their fear by their commissars?samsonlonghair wrote:Content
This is a stereotype, that FPS is only a bunch of modern military shooters set in a desert where we shoot racist caricatures of Arabs. And yes, some of the big franchises and names have gone this route. But it's also wrong. It's like saying that all 2D platformers feature cutesy graphics and let you butt-bounce enemies in vibrant color palettes meant only for little kids.samsonlonghair wrote:Style

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
How is a mouse not accurate? If a mouse isn't accurate, then how are you able to hit the submit button to send that post you sent, I'm assuming you didn't miss the button? Mouses are extremely accurate, where ever you point your cursor that's where your gun will shoot. Maybe you just never bothered to play enough to adjust to a mouse (I think most people do not like using a mouse at first), since it seems like you spend most of your gaming with a controller.
The timeliness I think is the oddest complaint. FPS usually have little cut scenes, you're almost thrusted into action, if you play multiplayer then matchmaking is usually as simple as dropping by a server and leaving when ever you want with no penalty, most FPS are intuitive, and most FPS single player campaigns are not long, 6 hours is usually a pretty long one, games like Half-Life are like 9 hours. I'd say most genres probably take more time investment on average to actually get return from them.
I'll never understand the realism complaint in video games. "If I wanted to see blah blah, I'd do it in real life" - really? If you wanted to fight in a major war, you'd just step outside all willy nily, it's that simple? I don't get why gamers ever go there, it's even ore ridiculous when people use that to discredit sports games.
Though that is a gigantic stereotype, to be honest there is much more color diversity in the FPS genre then most genres. Puzzles, platformers? I could stereotype those into being super bright and rainbowey games. FPS? Is Quake anything like Battlefield? Is that anything like Team Fortress? Is that anything like Goldeneye? They're very different aesthetics. Colors have nothing to do with genres in video games.
As for the "how can I tell if someone is behind me" bit, same way you would in real life. You hear them come up to you or you turn around, your ally will tell you someone is coming behind you (if you are playing multiplayer) or you logically deduce that someone is sneaking up to you based on the situation. Some games may even give you a radar.

Dude, I used a mouse in FPS gaming before I ever used a controller. I'm not saying that a mouse isn't accurate for other things. I just don't think it's terribly accurate for shooting. Trackballs work better.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I have a few opinions that people generally tend to disagree with.
-Skyward Sword is one of my favorite Zelda games of all time.
-I prefer the Tales of games to Final Fantasy in just about every way.
-The N64 controller is pure suck. (Though honestly so many people have already said this it doesn't even seem like an unpopular opinion at this point)
-Navi Isn't that bad. She takes up a few seconds of your time at the most.
-I've never been able to enjoy any of the Halo Games, they just don't do it for me for whatever reason.
-The Wii U gamepad was a really good idea, and it can create some very immersive and interesting gameplay, it's just the lack of third party exclusive games that make good use of it that is killing the console.
-The current generation of consoles were the least impressive generation I've ever experienced. There wasn't the giant leap forward that previous generation consoles had from their predecessors.
-I hate it when people take a game like smash bros, or pokemon and split up the characters into tiers, and then define a small hand full of tactics and strategies as the only good ones out of the thousands and thousands of possibilities.
