Yeah this. Normally actors dying, even young, I'm like "Damn, sucks for their family"... or if they're not young, "That's sad, sucks for their family, but they led a good life"... this one though, I was actually seriously saddened by it.

They did say we have 4 more movies to expect from him though at the very least, as a small solace.
Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!

Sad! I was hoping it'd be a bad hoax.

I'm also quite sad about this.

The Genie from Aladdin is possibly my favorite Disney character (certainly so from their movies) and that is in great part due to Robin Williams. Of course before and after that he performed a lot of good roles.

I think the Bicentennial Man hasn't been mentioned in the thread yet, and it is quite worth a watch as well (but be prepared to feel sad afterwards).

This...though I didn't realize it was him who played Genie(never paid attention to find out, that one was a shock just like gilbert doing iago). Gonna miss him I need to see some of this other stuff though :-\ Kinda sad that another great actor bit the dust....

There's a lot of kind of strange backstory concerning Robin Williams and the Genie.

I recall reading that he asked not to be named or advertised as the voice of the Genie, that the Genie not look like him and that the Genie character not occupy more than a certain amount of the movie poster. All kind of odd requests and all ones that Disney broke...which is why RW refused to be the Genie again in subsequent movies until recently when he made his peace with Disney.

So now we live in a world where Robin Williams committed suicide.

All I have to say is this is the first celebrity death that has ever had any effect on me.

I'm reminded of this part from "Infinite Jest" by David Foster Wallace:
The so-called ‘psychotically depressed’ person who tries to kill herself doesn’t do so out of quote ‘hopelessness’ or any abstract conviction that life’s assets and debits do not square. And surely not because death seems suddenly appealing. The person in whom Its invisible agony reaches a certain unendurable level will kill herself the same way a trapped person will eventually jump from the window of a burning high-rise.

Make no mistake about people who leap from burning windows. Their terror of falling from a great height is still just as great as it would be for you or me standing speculatively at the same window just checking out the view; i.e. the fear of falling remains a constant. The variable here is the other terror, the fire’s flames: when the flames get close enough, falling to death becomes the slightly less terrible of two terrors. It’s not desiring the fall; it’s terror of the flames. And yet nobody down on the sidewalk, looking up and yelling ‘Don’t!’ and ‘Hang on!’, can understand the jump. Not really. You’d have to have personally been trapped and felt flames to really understand a terror way beyond falling.
