What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?

for the record I do tend to work on a refund b/c he's not being an ass about it and it is a relatively cheap game...

But, going forward, should I just not sell carts with batteries? Should I play X number of minutes per save file on the cart? What's reasonable? It isn't like I am listing the game as a cart in "Like New" or something. How can I avoid this headache?

When I sell things on eBay - which is pretty rare - I tell people exactly what I did to test it and make no representations about the game beyond that point. For example, I will say:

"I tested the game by watching all of the opening cinematics and playing through the first level of the game."

I do not want someone returning a game to me because it stutters during the ending sequence, and I don't think I should have to play all the way (or even most of the way) through a game to "test" it. I warrant that the game works to the extent that I tested it, but beyond that, it is sold "as is".

Best thing to do is just be as courteous as you can with him and try to work things out peacefully. Definitely accept the return since he seems to have a genuine reason for returning it.

Somewhat long explanation/rant about returns follows.

There is no such as a no return as is policy anymore everything is covered by the eBay money back guarantee. It trumps any policies put into place by the seller.

The way eBay is basically the guy has a INAD claim no matter the severity of the issue as long as the issue wasn't clearly stated. Basically if he chooses to he can open an INAD within "30 days after actual (or latest estimated) delivery date" basically you are forced to refund and pay return shipping(If he uses eBay shipping labels they will automatically charge the shipping to your account). Arguing against one of these cases is nearly impossible since eBay is very lenient with what qualifies "Not as Described" and usually they side with the buyer unless their demands are completely unreasonable. eBay doesn't really thoroughly investigate this stuff since it's not their money that they are refunding so fraudulent claims are pretty common.

Also having a INAD case opened against you now nets you a defect and the defect system which comes into effect on the 20th is pretty crazy. If 5% of your transactions result in a defect, or if 0.3%(1 out of every 334 transactions) results in a case which gets escalated and you lose then your account can be restricted/suspended automatically.

As much as it sucks to say this eBay will most likely count the return itself as a defect if you go through their system. If you return the item through their return system for INAD it is a defect even after you provide him a full refund, and even if you skirt around their return system using the refund option on eBay can also result in a defect because the systems sees the fact that you are returning money shows there was a problem.

Pretty much any way you go you get boned but as eBay says that is the "cost of doing business" there. Just do right by your buyer and hope for the best.

Good on you.

Wish I could lend a hand but I'm not a seller.

Possibly:

"Tested, playable. Not responsible for battery failure as the game is 20+ years old. Acceptable condition but battery not guaranteed. An experience not to be missed."

It's almost 5 o'clock and I'm out of gas. Hopefully that helped a nit.

Fragems you are making me terrified of eBay. Bleh.

here's what I sent:
Dear Xxxxx,
I did play the cart for a few minutes with no problems, so I'm sorry you are encountering them. Ship it to XXXXXXXXX. As soon as I can confirm it is the same cart, I will issue you a full refund as well as the price of first class return shipping.

I wish you the best of luck in finding a 20 year old used SNES cart with a fully working battery in the future!

That is why I don't sell things there. Its policies are so favorable to buyers, it simply is not worth it.

Sorry for your negative feedback Dave.

I sold a $6 NES cart on amazon that I tested and the guy said it didnt work. Which probably meant his system was dirty or had loose pins. I just refunded and let him keep it. With fees and such, paying back his shipping would cost me more.
