You CAN play previous worlds, that's what Funky Flights is for!
Here's a tip: Let's say you beat the boss at the end of world 1. Before going into world 2, go back into world 1 and save. Then use Funky's Flights to go to world two. Repeat this after each world. Once you go into a new world, you wont be able to save until you reach Kandy or Funky (and travel back to a previous world). But once you have access to either, you can save as often as you like!
THANKYOU!!!
I started a new save file in the 1st position, also have an older save at position 2 at 47%. Keeping that there in case I get stuck on a level. At least now I can use Funky Flights to "preview" levels I have not yet unlocked on my save.
Honestly the most annoying thing about the DKC saves is that they save location only. Fire up the game again and you're back to 5 lives, 0 bananas, etc... Much like Super Mario World.

Wow glad the gba version doesn't do that last I checked

B-A-R-R-A-L = 50 lives
At least saving and Funky Flights is free in the first DKC. In DKC2, you usually had to pay for those services. I can definitely remember playing DKC2 with my brother when we were young. Our mother would tell us it's time to shut off the Nintendo for whatever reason, and we'd tell her "OK, we just have to save." Then a few minutes later she'd come in the room and say, "I'm not stupid, I know you're playing another level." Try and explain that one to mom. "No, you don't understand. It cost money to save and I'm only playing this level to get some coins so I CAN save."

I wasn't a kid at the time, but I had a similar problem with explaining why I can't "pause" WoW in the middle of the dungeon to go and throw away the trash

Can you blame them? Back then the last games my mother had played were frogger and pac-man. Even Sonic on my Mega Drive was too complex for her (nowadays she keeps asking me to build her a new PC to play facebook games on )

Ha, ha, any cheap computer could handle those if that's all she plays but still bugs me even to this day. I can understand if it was frogger, pacman or sometimes games like sonic but you just can't pause in the middle of a battle on anything portable it just doesn't work that way :-\

Man, I hate that crap.
What's the point of my Bajillion Marios if the game won't remember them?
I can understand some password games doing this just for simplicity's sake but why battery back-up games?

That happened to me with PSO.

This is slightly hive mind, but I hadn't read this thread up until now and was previously playing Donkey Kong Country. The mine cart stage was brutal as a kid and I breezed through (I say that lightly because I lost 4-5 lives in the process), where I could never beat it at my friend's house.
