Yeah Mask of the Sun was released about a month before Dawn of Ys. Apparently it was a bit rushed because Falcom/Tonkin House wanted the game on "inferior hardware" (Super Famicom vs. PC Engine CD) to be released first.

So, the "real" Ys V was a PC Engine CD game? For some reason I thought there were two Ys V...

EDIT: Never mind. I see that there are two Ys IV. I will have to play them both before moving on to Ys V.

EDIT: Never mind again. It appears that both versions of Ys IV are basically the same game. Accordingly, I will probably just play the SFC version. (As with Memories of Celceta, I might come back to Dawn of Ys after I have played through the rest of the games in the series.)

I thought the stories of the two that were released near each other were different, but I've not played them.

They're similar but........ different. Think arcade Ninja Gaiden vs. NES Ninja Gaiden. Same overall "premise" but significantly changed gameplay / story elements.

I think Dawn of Ys is probably the best game in the Ys series gamplay-wise, though the music in Ys Book I & II is impossible to beat. Dawn of Ys can be found for only like $10, but unfortunately the console it plays on is pricey. emulate that shit on a PSP

Probably Celceta if you're trying to keep things in order. Origins is a prequel and can be played any time.

There have been rumors of an Ys V remake. Guess we'll have to wait and see on that.

I'm going to begin soon. Got the Genesis port yesterday. Much like The Lost Vikings Together Retro I'm going to play the SNES and Genesis versions back-to-back. After that: Felghana.

Started SNES version last night. First two bosses down. Grinded to the max level in the owl section - kinda cheap, but this game is tough and I'll take all the help I can get.
