Noise, sometimes having too much thermal paste is just as bad as not enough. If it is too thick it will act as an insulator. They say to put a dab the size of a pea in the middle and that should be enough. I always do that the wipe the excess off the tip of the tube (which really should be very minimal) around the edges of the CPU. This has always worked for me.
But keep in mind the stock AMD coolers are not really that great. But, yeah 47C is really high.
I don't know how soon (hopefully really soon) but I am planning to upgrade the GPU in my wife's PC and that will free up her two 7800 GT's that I would gladly donate to the build. They are only 256MB and they are 10 years old, but I will send them your way when we upgrade them if you want.
