you have a good eye. I certainly thought I had a good thin layer. I'll check temps w/ CPU-Z and report back.

Update - got Win7 installed. Working on installing drivers now.

Agreed.

Noise, sometimes having too much thermal paste is just as bad as not enough. If it is too thick it will act as an insulator. They say to put a dab the size of a pea in the middle and that should be enough. I always do that the wipe the excess off the tip of the tube (which really should be very minimal) around the edges of the CPU. This has always worked for me.

But keep in mind the stock AMD coolers are not really that great. But, yeah 47C is really high.

I don't know how soon (hopefully really soon) but I am planning to upgrade the GPU in my wife's PC and that will free up her two 7800 GT's that I would gladly donate to the build. They are only 256MB and they are 10 years old, but I will send them your way when we upgrade them if you want.

Actually I did get the gpu working so we are good there.

Had an odd issue where cpuz, realtemp, etc all just show 0 degrees so I haven't been able to double check or monitor temps yet.

honestly I think it was just a driver issue. Once I updated, it worked swimmingly.

Those easy simple things are always my favorite problems to have, they seem like a pain and you have no clue what to do and start trying to fix them by doing some simple obvious troubleshooting that ends up solving the problem.

For what it's worth y'all, my AMD FX 6300 idles around 35-45ish. When it's throttling it can get into the 50C range. It's never given me problems and is reportedly a normal temperature. The past is fine and my wiring and airflow is good.
