Clearly the Looney Toons lobby had something to do with this.

And thank god science stays the same and new discoveries are never made :).
I wish instead of demoting Pluto they instead added Eris and Ceres to the planet list. We could have had 12 or possible more planets. But no matter what the status of our solar system had to change with the the discovery of these dwarf planets.

Pluto should have been grandfathered in.

Here here.

And it's "Your-ah-nus", not "Your anus". At least that's what my Mom says.

Saturn will always be the coolest looking planet ever. Jupiter, a close second.

I don't see how that's so funny, that was one of the options. The General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union was debating three options. To add planets in, take Pluto out or Grandfather it in regardless of the definition of what a planet is.

I suppose it gave me a chuckle because it sounded like terminology from a cell phone plan while referring to Pluto. Also, I didn't know it was a consideration to actually grandfather it in, so now it is much less funny. :?

Blissful ignorance?

On the topic of more education making people lean more towards a Democratic vote, I think the type of job you go into affects that.

It didn't come out of nowhere. Schools in the US are generally pretty bad at teaching math skills relative to the rest of the world, and the most common method of math education is solely rote memorization of particular approaches. Common Core doesn't really include any "new" ideas in math, necessarily. Every technique in Common Core is a tested, proven educational technique. Common Core just recommends that educators use alternative teaching methods to supplement memorization of formulas and techniques, including counting, grouping, and the like. It is meant to encourage number familiarity rather than simply "in this case you do 'x' thing".

Most of the people complaining about Common Core Math either don't know what it actually includes, or have looked at it but don't understand the techniques (probably because they, themselves were taught much less flexible, more rote memorization math skills.) By most accounts, properly implemented Common Core Math programs do improve math skills AND improve student comfort levels for engaging with math.

Knowing something about the politics of the group that puts this together I've had my suspicions about its veracity, but haven't looked into it much…can you confirm that CC Math isn't this insane?
