It's tax free clothes this weekend in Texas. I know other states have a weekend here or there as well for this sort of thing. Time for me to go look at shorts replenishment since they're heading to "off season".

Really? In this case the main aim is for parents to buy back to school clothes. In what way is that 'not right'? It isn't like the pork industry is going to suffer unfair competition because a bunch of people that were planning on making ham pants bought some jeans instead. I'm with you on certain groups of people getting a break purely because of some factors, but in this case they don't require proof that people are in school. Everyone gets tax free on clothes purchases.

Big picture - Products that are not exempt are taking care of required taxes needed in the coffer. I am for any tax reduction, but make it across the board so it is equal for ALL producers and ALL consumers.

Let me drop some science.

In most areas of NC, public school student's parents have financial issues with affording their "item list" for the school year. The tax free weekend is like a godsend for parents who are financially struggling. Sure, we are talking about percentages, but it does matter.

Who pays the price for this? The already underpaid teachers.

This happens in two ways:

1) Domino effect: Teacher buys the kids in need what they need. Charges it to the school. These charges cut the budget. School gets in debt, and needs to become "lean", Teachers lose their jobs.

2) Stress and Sacrifice: A Lot, and I mean a lot, of teachers will take their hard earned money and pay for the supplies out of their own pocket so the domino effect doesn't take place. Sure, they get a break on taxes, but it shouldn't be an issue in the first place.

Ya know what's nuts? I would say the majority of people who complain about the education system in NC are NOT teachers. The teachers are so focused on their job that usually they let others do the talking for them.

This. My daughter is in a very good public school, and I was shocked at how, even there, the teachers (and, to a certain extent, parent volunteers) are required to provide items that were provided by the schools when I was younger. The lack of care and compassion that our current state legislature shows for educators in this state is disgusting.
