Great post. Something to chew on that I have never really thought about, although it seems as I read it, something I should have known.Ack wrote:Think about it like this: if an idea becomes politicized in any capacity, then people who favor one view or the other will tend to latch onto that view. And if academia leans one way, then how honest and accurate can the research be if it is being conducted and reviewed through a lens of bias? Personal view influences everything, so historical research can be influenced, as can research in literature, art, social behavior and sociology, statistics, political science, linguistics, communication, philosophy, economics, so on and so forth. Yes, even engineering and the philosophies behind its purpose and usage.ZeroAX wrote:I really don't understand what political views have to do with academia unless you are talking economic majors.
it's not like engineering changes depending on your world view :S
What if the history of your country were only examined from a left wing or a right wing viewpoint? How do you think we study the Vietnam War in the US? What about global climate change, which has seen in some cases data fudged or suppressed to see a particular view rectified or cast out? The way you view politics is heavily influential on the way you view the world, because it is effectively an expression of your core beliefs on humanity and society. So if the principal viewpoint is one way, will research be conducted another? And what if something radical occurs that shows that the particular in-vogue viewpoint is wrong? Does that information get suppressed or praised?

When I was high school..over 10 years ago... We never even brought up/talked about climate change...
It wasn't a "thing" back then
Re: Private University or Trade school?
It has always been a "thing". I'm quite sure it would have been discussed in nearly any halfway competent science class at some point during your education. Maybe you missed it?JsGameRoom wrote:Ack wrote: How do you think we study the Vietnam War in the US? What about global climate change, ?

I'll grant you the fact that it wasn't getting media exposure or having buzzwords spit left and right such as "global warming". But global climate change has been well known about and documented for much more than ten years.
I'm also completely befuddled at where you are going with this exactly. I'm sorry, but I just don't get the point.

That's just it. Here, those things aren't subjected to the same consensus. Most things in America are politicized to some extent: abortion, gay rights, climate change and environmentalism, transportation, economics, foreign policy, law and judicial review, social welfare, government spending, monetary policy, etc. All of these are potential battlegrounds based on different interpretations through a political lens, and some are particularly virulent and bloody battlegrounds in America's social landscape. If anything, foreign policy is in the backseat to the others, with the possible exception being matters of war, though even that comes and goes.ZeroAX wrote:Ok I understand where you are coming from Ack.
But I guess we are just a world apart, cause here when talking about the divide between left and right you are talking almost exclusively about economic policy. In all other matters (global warming, gay rights, abortion, foreign policy ect.) there is (more or less) a general consensus (even if some times I personally disagree with that general consensus) and thus not much to "fight" over other than the economy and jobs. (EDIT: which you many, makes it look even worse when almost the entire continent has fucked up so badly on the single topic worth debating)

When I was high school Pluto was a planet. Teens these days learn different things than I learned. I don't know if it's based on politics or what. that's where I'm going with it..
What is SO different now than say 2001?
And no.. we didn't talk about climate change. We basically read directly out of a book, and our " science" class was basically science/chemistry mixed into one.
My biggest example is this " Common core Math" bullshit. Seriously where/when did that come about? What caused that to come out of nowhere?

I don't know what school you went to but schools started talking about climate change and enviromental issues in the late 80's early 90's. The hole in the ozone was a hot topic.JsGameRoom wrote:Ack wrote: How do you think we study the Vietnam War in the US? What about global climate change, ?

Where's my chippy? There's my chippy.
Re: Private University or Trade school?
That's what I'm getting at. There was still talk of emissions from aerosol cans and too many cars for as long as I can remember. Even more so, global climate change is not limited to the changes we see now. I would consider say....the ice age as a global climate change and it was certainly taught about when you went to school. The climate (and it's changing) has been a great contributing factor to the rise and fall of many species and civilizations and a lot of it was taught when I was in school, over 15 years ago.
Times do change, but they also stay the same. Hence the importance of learning history and science so we might better understand what comes next. Of course we have a better understanding now of things than we did 10-20 years ago and if we didn't, we wouldn't be making progress.

A shitty school in Miami Florida where in 01 we were already walking through a metal detector, had a police presence, gang and major drug issues among other things..pepharytheworm wrote:I don't know what school you went to but schools started talking about climate change and enviromental issues in the late 80's early 90's. Clearly the Looney Toons lobby had something to do with this.JsGameRoom wrote: When I was high school Pluto was a planet. I don't know if it's based on politics or what. that's where I'm going with it..
And thank god science stays the same and new discoveries are never made

But it's just crazy to think my whole there were 9 planets. Then BAM all of a sudden. Gone haha.
I'm not saying science doesn't change, but in the last 10 years the amount of difference between things I was taught to now is insane.
