How many wish the DS had more ports?

Post by jvalentine98 »

It's almost unfair that the GBA got all the ports, as the DS is a much better machine, and can be played on that huge screen the 3DS XL has.

Look, I'm in my early 30s. I have to work, I don't have a lot of time to sit down and forget my life to get into all these new games. I love platformers. I love PS1 games, for the most part. Not big on RPGs, simply because they can suck your life away, which is fine for a kid, but adults really can't play multiple RPGs and have a life. It doesn't work.

My Ds library consists of:

Sonic Classic Collection
New Super Mario Bros
Resident Evil Deadly Silence
Brain Age 1/2 (for my fiance)
Tetris Ds (for my fiance)
Namco Museum
Sonic Rush

That's it. I just wish there were more games that were like those. You either know it from your childhood all ready, or it has the same story since 1985, like New Super Mario Bros.

The only other ones I found that may be worth picking up were Myst and Mortal Kombat, obviously I played those as a youngster.

There are quite a few ports to the DS. Several enhanced with extra features and better visuals, including Nes, Genesis, SNES, N64 and PS1 games among others. The coolest part is some of these never made it to the US before.

Here are some more ports and remakes.

KIRBY SUPER STAR ULTRA
DRAGON QUEST IV, V, VI
FRONT MISSION
PHOENIX WRIGHT: ACE ATTORNEY various titles
CHRONO TRIGGER

FINAL FANTASY III
Pokémon Heart Gold/Soul Silver
Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars

But the DS and DSLite will play the GBA games. Porting games over and over and over makes a stagnating marketplace. That's part of the reason Atari tanked in the 80s. They kept releasing the same games on the 2600, 5200, and 7800. Just because you want to play the same old games forever on newer hardware doesn't mean everyone does or will buy enough copies to justify the effort.

But I'm me, and I want to play what I like. I can't control or care about what anyone else wants to buy. That's of no interest to me. The GBA games CAN be played on DS, sure. But the DS was more advanced and has obvious advantages to a GBA. Such as a XL screen, that I can still buy new.

Look, I could care less what's coming out next week. I'm old school. I WILL spend my hard earned money on a classic game I love that's getting a new treatment. I'm not going to buy the new Pokemon, I don't care how much Nintendo invested in it, it means nothing to me. But I have a good job, and dollars to spend. So cater to me.

Umm, I hate to break it to you but Final Fantasy III and IV are not ports. When I played FFIV on SNES or GBA, it didn't look like that. I played the old FF games because they "weren't 3D."

As for SMB 64, I don't care. I bought New Super Mario Bros for a reason...It plays from the side. It's not 3d. I want to run and jump from the side, like Mario was originally. Because I'm 31, and I had an NES in 1988.

I'm not going to mince words with you. I like what I like and I'm not the only one. I have money to spend and I'm not going to buy the garbage that comes out every week that is forced down my throat and proclaimed as "it's new and you need to have it, because it's new."

It does. There are many people on this board who manage to balance jobs, family commitments and what not while also playing through RPG's (and games in general) of all varieties. I myself managed to beat Skyrim near launch while working a 70+ hour a week job. Nice generalisation though.

As is usual with your threads, the title says one thing but your OP says quite another. Are you actually asking whether we think the DS should have had more ports (which Pephary points out it did anyway), or did you just want to vent?

If it's the former I'd advise you look into emulation on the DS as it seems quite easy and cheap to do. You won't be able to play your PS1 games but it will give you access to a multitude of console and arcade releases.

If it's the latter I advise you get a grip.

Do you sleep or eat or spend time with a loved one? I can break down how many hours are in a week (there are 168) it's a numerical certainty. So I don't believe a damned thing you typed, except you don't like me for some fanciful reason.

Fwiw, 168 hours, minus 70 hours at work, minus 7 hours sleep a night leaves 49 hours in a week. If you spend anywhere CLOSE to half of those 49 remaining hours playing a game, you have no time for anything. So you're full of crap.

I don't like you because you don't start threads with the intention of using the knowledge of the people on this board to expand your gaming horizons. You start threads to talk nonsense about stuff you don't understand and when people do try to give you advice or help, as Hobie and Perphary have done above, you throw it back at them.

And yes, I did manage to work five, fourteen hour night shifts a week, come home, hang out with my girlfriend and play Skyrim through to completion with a buddy over Live. I even went out on a few nights on the tiles as well. Imagine that! It's almost as if my life didn't revolve around my work. Hmm...

And isn't it like half three in morning where you are? Don't you need to up early for work or something?

Edit: Thanks for doing the maths on how my own life broke down but I have to tell you your figures are wrong. I don't sleep 7 hours a night, usually it's somewhere between 4-6. And it was very cold that winter so I did spend more time than usual indoors I'll grant you that. Even then though, if we go by your reckoning 49 hours is two whole days out of seven free time. I think there's a term for that but it eludes me right now. Something with "end" in it? It might be french or a portmanteau. Wookend? Warkend? Help me out here, Jilly-bobs.

Like most things in life, it's not about crunch time, it's about consistency. If you consistently do something and progress, it'll get done sooner rather than later.

With those numbers, you could easily get in 10-20 hours a week and still have time for friends. But that 10-20 hours would also be split with all your other hobbies. But that's not unrealistic.

Having 50-100 hours a month to knock out an RPG is totally feasible. You just have to be consistent with your time.

Not to mention, we're talking about handheld RPGs here. Something that's made to be fiddled with in small increments. When you're at work, or commuting, that's not a solid 8, 10, 12, etc hour day. There's breaks, breathers, and time in which you genuinely have a couple minutes to spare. But I'm not counting that above (Though, most people I know who pound out jRPGs on DS, do it while getting to work or during breaks, in a couple weeks that game is done.)

As for ports ... I just wish we got that Metroid 2 remake that the Fusion and Zero Mission team was going to make.

Handhelds are the ideal way to play RPGs. Especially on the DS. Just put that shiz to sleep whenever you need a break.

Also, not all RPGs are super-long. You can beat Legacy of Ys faster than you can finish Bioshock or Assassin's Creed or whatever.
