Looking at getting into the fine art of speed running, and figured there must be some racketeers who do this. So, anyone here participate in or enjoy speedruns?
Some questions I have:
-What was the first game you decided to speedrun?
-What do you speedrun on? Official emulators or original hardware?
-Why do you enjoy speed running?
-How do you choose what game you want to speedrun next?
Yes, this was inspired by Dsh's thread about the Ocarina run
Any speedrunners here?

Never decided to speedrun, just happened.
Ninja Gaiden.
Always original hardware.
I enjoy it because I have little time to play games.
The game chooses me.

Re: Any speedrunners here?
Ninja Gaiden is a really fun game to watch in speedruns, it really shows off how fluid the game is.
Have you seen the pacifist runs? Getting through that game without killing any non-boss enemies... just insane. I still haven't made it past 6-3
I think what I am finding most appealing right now about speed running is all the glitches and bugs people find/use to shorten their run. Some, like the Pokémon Yellow 3 minute glitch, is not up my alley, but being able to pull off a sub 20m Ocarina run, linking together all of those difficult tricks... well, its like taking what I love about shmups and sticking it in any game I want to.
So, stuff like Ocarina, the Sonic games, Donkey Kong 64, etc seem the most appealing to me. Although, I checked out a 100% Yoshi's Island run, and wow.. that game is beautiful.

Super Mario Bros. However, I look at the "speedrun" differently - it's not about "finishing the game as quickly as possible" - it's about "finishing the complete game as quickly as possible". As in, no Warp Worlds. If I want to dominate Mario, I want to dominate Mario.
-What do you speedrun on? Official emulators or original hardware?
Both. I think my Wii is a liiiiiittle bit laggier than the NES, though.
-Why do you enjoy speed running?
I do it just to see how hard I can own the entire game of Mario. Feels good, man.

Final Fantasy IX is the best one

Re: Any speedrunners here?
Nice, Mario 3 was the first game I ever tried to speedrun, but I was a wuss and went straight to World 8. I think the full play is much more interesting now.
Do you play your Wii and NES on the same tv? If so, what controller do you use on the Wii? I'm worried about that lag, since I was thinking of using the Virtual Console port of Ocarina to speedrun instead of the cart.
Also, don't feel forced to stick to my few questions, I just don't know how to start a thread like some of the pros around here.
I'll be honest, I've been pouring through SGDQ and AGDQ videos for the last few days, and it feels good to be learning things again, and to have that magical feeling that anything could still be possible in a game, even one as thoroughly played as Ocarina.

I don't see how that could be possible on the levels with the multiple star throwing ninjas.

I don't speed run but I find a lot of them pretty fascinating.

Re: Any speedrunners here?
I tried for a while to get the record in Mario 2. My best time was alittle over six minutes and the record was just shy of eight. But the day I went to submit my run to Twin Galaxies, they updated with a new run that beat my time by one second. I have not tried since.

Holy crap, that sucks fast.
I would be crushed.
The run starts at 5:40
He does hit enemies, he just makes sure to not kill any. I've watched so many runs that I can't recall if he was successful all the way through, but its an impressive watch.

Silent Hill 3
PlayStation 2
I was playing through it a lot to unlock everything and just kept going. Eventually I could beat the game in about an hour on normal. The current record on console is 45 minutes, but it was set on easy difficulty.
I kind of stopped trying for speed runs after that. I didn't like just dedicating myself to a single game over and over again, especially as my income improved and I was able to start purchasing more games.
