1UP sold, EGM definitely shutting down

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

1UP sold, EGM definitely shutting down

I'll just let that stand. I knew someday EGM wouldn't be publishing, but to lose 30 to 40 people at 1UP is huge. I live on those podcasts. I really hope most of the major personalities can stay on, like Shane, Jeremy, Garnett, etc.

:(

I actually hate most of the 1up podcasts. They're just as unprofessional as IGN, but instead of being loud and obnoxious, they are quiet, shy, and boring.

Still, sad to see it go. I remember reading that magazine a decade ago...God, some good times I spent drooling over PlayStation and Nintendo 64 games. I remember their article on Tech Romancer for the Dreamcast...a little blurb about how we'd never get anything as awesome as that.

What a sad day for the gaming world.
You know that story, about how NASA spent millions of dollars developing this pen that writes in Zero G? Did you ever read that?
You know how the Russians solved the problem?
They used a pencil.

Say bye to print and hello to digital :( . Only difference is you can't put digital content on your shelf and look back on it 10 years later.

Neither 1UP nor EGM has ever placed high on my list in their respective categories. Mind you, I have no idea what the old EGM was like. I did get a free 12 month subscription to it last year and needless to say I never took the plunge to actually pay for it. Game Informer is a much better magazine IMHO. The only modern console I own is a Wii and GI really isn't geared towards that kind of casual Wii thing that I so much enjoy. So it's really not for me, but I recognize it's good for what it is.

As for 1UP, well I just never really got into it. Joystiq and the occasional visit to IGN or Gamespot have always been enough mainstream online game coverage for me.

So clearly I'm not upset about it.

I feel sad because some of the people (like Mielke) I feel like i've grown up with.
It's the end of an era, even though it was inevitable.
But its still sad to see it go.

EGM was great years ago. As for 1UP, most of the recent reviews I've read on their site are crap. Most of the more popular sites today like IGN, Gamespot and 1up are pretty shitty. I hardly visit them anymore

Who cares? There's TONS of gaming coverage online these days and much better sites than 1UP in my opinion. This isn't a big loss.
