It is interesting, but it seems there should be a distinguishing factor between the 2.
There is.

Speedrunners separate this by % completition of the game. Since this is any % of the game they can go as crazy as they like but going 100% you have to play it more normally.

Speedrunning the game by any means necesary.

I must admit when you pull out the glitches you feel amazing, i tried a "glitchy" run on ocarine once. I managed to get out of the kokiri forest without beating the deku tree and i was on my way to see how i could be adult link without finishing the dodongo cavern. It requires a lot of effort and knowledge on that point so i leave it there

Is fun to play the game by breaking it.
The great Deku tree is basically just there to teach you the mechanics of Ocarina gameplay anyway. Anyone who has played OoT more than once has no need to play this first "world". It's not hard to find the spot near the beginning to skip straight to the lost woods. Think of this as analogous to the warp pipes. Nintendo put that warp near the beginning intentionally so experienced players can skip the "how to" parts of the game.

I saw this on another site and ignored it... but this is a great video. I'd definitely watch more narrated speed-runs like this.

I saw a Sonic 2 speed run that was broken down and explained and it's really interesting to hear about the communities that form around speed running games and the strategies they come up with and glitches they discover. They really work together to tear games apart. It really is like a science as he puts it, testing and re-testing all the various different methods and discovering what ultimately shaves off the most time, sometimes only fractions of a second.

I think it's probably most interesting to see it done with games like this which were totally not designed to be sped through.

Awesome.
Cosmo is my second favorite speedrunner and I've loved hs stuff since I saw his OoT run at AGDQ 2013.
Insert clever quote here.

Sonic games are pretty much made for speed running with the built-in timers which is what they go by when speed running the games.

Here's an entertaining live run for a charity marathon for Doctor's Without Borders:

It's not perfect by any means but the commentary makes it more interesting to me. The current world record is 15:08.

I'll check that one out... but I can easily say when it comes to this stuff, I'd much rather see videos done like the OoT one here. Just give us game footage and a voice over, not some awkward crowds watching someone play the game.

He also does a remarkable speedrun of Wind Waker that is just FULL of neat glitches! :)

Me too. I've never seen speed runs done this way. Usually it's just silent with a timer on the side.
