Zelda Ocarina of Time speedrun w/ commentary

I don't like OoT myself nor do I understand everything going on here, but this video is really fascinating in large part because of the commentary. Speedrunning is a truly interesting gamer subculture and I have nothing but the utmost respect for the work and effort people put into these kinds of things; this commentary really gets to the heart of it. I also think that the "thanks" section at the end is a testament to what a great community can exist around such a niche part of gaming.

I'm someone who generally doesn't like to watch anything video-game related on YouTube, but this is really worth your ~25 minutes when you get the chance if you have even the slightest interest in the game or the speedunning community.

Speedrunning is an interesting phenomenon but I can't pretend I'll ever understand the motivations that drive it.

I don't even like it when games challenge me to beat stages in a certain time.

I think the glitch exploiting methods are slightly more interesting though, as I can't understand why anyone would want to race through a game like OoT under normal conditions.

It blows my mind how much efford people put into the speedruns and finding new glitches just for the fun of it, to me it sounds like work.

I must admit when you pull out the glitches you feel amazing, i tried a "glitchy" run on ocarine once. I managed to get out of the kokiri forest without beating the deku tree and i was on my way to see how i could be adult link without finishing the dodongo cavern. It requires a lot of effort and knowledge on that point so i leave it there

Is fun to play the game by breaking it.

Dude said 2 years and 12,000 runs. Madness.

I can do speedruns for Super Metroid with some sequence breaking... but it feels like child's play compared to things like this. It blows my mind how people pull off stuff like this in 3D games with all the insane glitches and how they even discovered them.

Details all the way down to playing a Chinese version for less textboxes, hilarious.

Thumbs up.

Also this is the one thing I kind of miss from the PSX/N64 era and how much more open and free games were back then. It's a rarity to see games nowadays with ludicrous glitches that were common back then.

I really didn't think I would enjoy the video, so I'm just here to say that I was completely wrong. It's definitely worth the watch.

It is kind of paradoxical to see how much time is dedicated to find the shortest way through a game.

Anyway, nice vid dish. Makes me want to replay the game soon.

That is easily one of, if not the most ridiculous and insane pieces of gaming I have ever seen.

I am truly astounded.

N64 speedruns are always my favorite, since their glitches are usually more outlandish due to the hobbled construction of early 3D game engines. The Donkey Kong 64 speedrun from last year's AQDQ is a great example of this masterful trickery:

This feels more about glitching out a game and such than actually speedrunning it.

It is interesting, but it seems there should be a distinguishing factor between the 2.

I know, right? I mean, I generally don't enjoy speedrun videos but the contextualization and explanation of everything just makes it really very compelling.
