Post by ExedExes »

I've been playing it these past few weeks, but I still can't get past Chapter 2. It's the section after all the colored boxes with the switching bullet colors, then I'm down to one life for the boss. My other scores have not been better than the one I previously posted either. I can chain about 60% of Chapter 1 pretty well, if anything.

I was also glad to see this as a pick. Final score update later tonight.

Welcome to Phelios!

A couple of things before you play.

Arcade/MAME players -- Press the F2 key (or go to your PCB's service switch) and turn Rank Select OFF. Lives stay at 3, hits stay at 2. Keep difficulty and extend ranks at B.

Genesis/MD players -- Advanced Mode allows you to play all the stages, so please play on that mode. After Advanced Mode is cleared, Expert Mode becomes unlocked, so please make a note of that on your score if you are playing on Expert.

Finally, no autofire debates this month as you hold down the button for a more powerful shot on all ports. SUCKAS!

Will hopefully have time to give both versions a bash this month, if only briefly.

One thing about the Genesis/MD version. You can endlessly farm for points on a couple of the bosses. Your score will depend on your patience and free time available.

Here is what I mean:

I arrived at this boss with 1.1 million points.
I had that many points from milking the Stage 2 boss. I got bored and just killed it.

I stayed in the same spot and just kept tapping the fire button as I watched TV.
I wasn't even looking at the screen and reached 2 million. I just shut it off at that point.

It wouldn't be a new month without an issue that I may have overlooked for each game, right?

As far as I know, there are 3 scores posted on the Shmups forum thread for the MD/Genesis port on Advanced mode that were ALLs- 3245180, 2310110, and 1297780. Those scores show me that there was no obvious milking going on with any of them, or else they'd be much higher by the end of the game, as pointed out by hashiriya.

Thank you for pointing out the exploit, but I feel that I can trust all MD/Genesis scores that are posted using the scores from the Shmups forum as a sort of baseline/what-to-expect if you happen to clear the game. I spent good money on getting this port (it isn't exactly ultra cheap) and my Retron 5 and by heck I'm gonna play it.

So what I'm saying is -- Don't abuse this exploit, but go ahead and post your MD/Gen scores. I'll be on the lookout for unusually high score entries.

Took a couple of first runs on the Genesis (Retron5) and both times got to about 75K until dying in the ring of fire thing on the second level :?

I don't like how you can't see your score when you die. Is there a point threshold where you get to put your name in and can snag a screenshot or something?
