Being socially active is a must. From my limited experience the cliche "It's not what you know, it's who you know" applies.
I'd also recommend checking out if you could be an assistant to the curator at your local museum. That would be beneficial to your future endeavors. Even if it doesn't pay, it will give you a foot in the door.
