Rate Your Top Ten Favorite Marvel Related Video Games

Post by Luke »

Or list your top five. Or three.

Crossovers count.

Struggling with my list as, as much as I love Ultimate Destruction, Legends and M Vs C, X2 seems to capture the character better than any other game.

Have at you!

I had a harder time with this than I thought, at least without resorting to listing all of the Capcom fighters.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance (multi-console)
X-Men (Konami, arcade)
Spider-Man 2 (Movie game, multi-console)
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (Dreamcast)
The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction (multi-console)
X-Men 2: Clone Wars (Genesis)
Spider-Man (PlayStation/PC/DC game from 2000)
The Punisher (Arcade)
The Invincible Iron Man (Fun little Game Boy Advance platformer.)
X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse (multi-console)

Not in any order...

Spider-man: Shattered Dimensions - Multi
Spider-man: Web of Shadows - Multi
Maximum Carnage - Genesis (Yes, specifically Genesis. Hate the music on the snes version)
X-men 2: Clone Wars - Genesis
Marvel Ultimate Alliance - Multi
X-men - Arcade
X-men Origins: Wolverine - Multi (not a great movie, but awesome game, go play it)
Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 - Dreamcast
X2: Wolverine's Revenge - Multi
Spider-man - Dreamcast

There are others I love, but that cuts it to 10.

My list is almost entirely Spider-man and X-men.

X-Men Origins Wolverine - Like a God of War game, but with a cooler main character, and what I considered to be a slightly more user friendly combat system. I felt this game did a good job capturing the savage, unstoppable beast that is Wolverine. There's a lot of fun ways to kill enemies in the game, particularly due to how well the game makes use of the environment (unlike most beat 'em up/hack n slash games). The occasional lame puzzle and god awful platforming drag the game down a bit though

Thor God of Thunder (DS) - By Wayforward, I never actually finished this, but what I played of it was a really fun beat'em up with great visuals. Very air combo/juggle friendly, and unique in how you can have the action going between two screens if I remember correctly. You could knock pillars and stuff on to enemies too, which was cool.

Xmen Mutant Apocalypse - A great, purely side scrolling (no semi-isometric view) beat'em up in the vein of Ninja Warriors Again, but with some platforming thrown in. I loved some of the music in this, like Psylocke's theme, Wolverine's theme, and Cyclops' theme. Being able to play the first couple levels in any order, and then getting to choose what character to use in later stages was very cool. Only gripe I had was the sometimes finicky Street Fighter style control for special attacks.

Deadpool - The gameplay is nothing new if you've played stuff like Rocksteady's Batman games and the occasional third person shooter, but it sure does justice to the character and his quirky, oddball humor. Building up combo chains with successive, uninterrupted kills was awesome. I also loved some parts of the game where it was you as Deadpool and the game using Cable just thrown into a large area slaughtering big groups of bad guys. There was one section I loved where I fun a perfect sniper spot to just pick off enemies with Pool's guns while Cable was engaging enemies front and center. I could build up massive combo chains in that part while enjoying the back and forth commentary from Deadpool and Cable as we slaughtered people. There are parts of this game that have the oddity of a good Suda 51 game. It's quirkiness reminds me of something like Lollipop Chainsaw

X-Men Legends - So many games spun off this formula, including X-Men Legends II and the Marvel Ultimate Alliance games. I loved the team aspect of the gameplay and the arcade feel of the game. A nice mix of stuff from Gauntlet, beat'em ups and Diablo style games.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance - Great expansion of the X-Men Legends formula, and I felt like they gave it a bit more beat 'em up flavor too.

Marvel Super Heroes - Arcade - This and Children of the Atom established the awesome formula that Capcom's versus games would use. I loved kicking ass with Psylocke in this and the gems added a nice element to the combat. I remember being blown away by how well this game's art style perfectly captured the Marvel characters.

X-Men vs Street Fighter - My first exposure to Capcom's "versus" formula, and it's still my favorite one. Things got a little too crazy with the Marvel vs Capcom games, though I loved those too

Spider-Man (2000 Video Game) - Played this on PS1. I don't know if it's aged well, but at the time it so perfectly captured Spider-Man's character and had an awesome chase sequence involving Doc Oc. Since then, there have been tons of great 3D Spider-Man games, but it all started here.

Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction - I couldn't think of what to put in the number 10 spot, then thought of this game. I didn't love it per say, but I did finish the game and thought it did a pretty great job of making you feel like you were the Hulk. My one issue with the game was that the game's difficulty seemed to spike up pretty high at times. As if the developers had to turn the odds against you as much as possible to make up for how incredibly powerful the Hulk is. This makes some parts of the game quite frustrating

No particular order and only from games I've played a significant amount (I've barely touched most of the fighting games)

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (PC, etc)
X-Men 2: Clone Wars (Gen)
X-Men (Arcade)
Spider-Man 2 (PS2, etc)
Hulk: Ultimate Destruction (PS2, etc) (followed closely by Hulk, I just think UD is better)
X-Men: Children of the Atom
X2: Wolverine's Revenge (PS2, etc)
Ultimate Spider-Man (PC, PS2, etc)
Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions (PS3, PC, etc)
Lego Marvel Super Heroes (Wii U, PS4, etc)

I think a DC list would be really interesting. It's one area of licensing where they actually dominate Marvel (Mostly because of good Batman games >_>)

Actually, I think Batman is the ONLY DC character who has had great games. I think that's in large part due to people not actually caring enough about other DC characters to try and make games for them. I mean, Superman has the most gaming entries other than Batman, none of which have been great. Besides those two, it's hard to find many games for other DC characters, just the rare Justice League game here and there. I hate saying this as a DC guy, but it makes me wonder what that means that there have been more games made for various Marvel characters over the years, then there have been for DC characters.
