I watched Furious Six last night

I always wrote off this series as just a bunch of crappy movies that made money because for some reason people are fascinated by Vin Diesel, who has always struck me as a mediocre action star and awful actor. I've never understood the appeal of guys like him or Jason Statham. I totally see it in guys like Antonio Banderas and Duane Johnson, who have the sort of charisma an action star needs, but I feel like all Diesel and Statham bring to the table is their low, barely intelligible, gravely voices and not much else. But apparently something strange happened around the fifth entry in this series that has led to these movies actually getting good reviews.

so I checked out Fast and Furious 6, and just to get the negatives out of the way - some of the dialog is just plain terrible and a lot of the humor seems aimed at the lowest possible common denominator. You can see so many of these punch lines coming a mile away and the way these characters talk sometimes is like how high school kids must think cool people talk. On the plus side, it certainly delivers in the one area I expect a movie like this to, and that's the amazing driving scenes. Bad ass looking cars, adrenaline pumping music, and lots of awesome stunts not dependent on CGI. There's some crazy stuff happening in some of those scenes. A lot of it is over the top and crazy, but never really goes overboard to the point where I'm like, "Okay this is fucking ridiculous". Well, actually I take that back, there is one god awful moment that made me roll my eyes by how stupid it was
Michelle Rodriguez and Vin Diesel flying through the air over a bridge was a bit much.

The cast sure is pretty, and some of them have some good onscreen charisma, particularly Duane Johnson (a.k.a. The Rock) and the main villain. Others though, are boring as fuck and feel like a waste of screen time (i.e. Vin Diesel and Gina Carano). And Roman is fucking annoying. He's the token black dude who always has to make jokes or one liners, and most of them suck. The hacker black dude is a much better character and doesn't feel like such a bad stereotype. I also like Han, who feels more like a real person than most of the characters.

There's some decent non-vehicular action in the movie, but it all feels tame after watching The Raid 2, but it's hard for any movie to really top the martial arts in that movie. It's pretty much the new standard. Still, it's nice to get a little diversity in Furious Six, but the movie is clearly at its best when people are behind the wheel and cool shit is happening

So I guess I enjoyed the movie, mostly for the the cool vehicle stunts, and the bad ass that is The Rock (who has ten times more charisma than Vin Diesel). I also liked the idea of the team going up against, as one character puts it, their "evil twins." in this rival team of criminal racers. I always like it when characters in a story go up against what is essentially their evil counterparts(like Star Fox vs Star Wolf, Buffy vs Faith, Xena vs Callisto, Darkwing vs Negaduck, etc.). Sadly, the movie doesn't do as much with this as it could, but it's still sort of cool. Beyond that though, it's pretty much what you expect from a dumb Hollywood blockbuster - pretty people trying way to hard to sound cool and failing about fifty percent of the time, low brow humor (look! They made that guy have to take his cloths off HAHAHAHAHAH  ), and a rather nonsensical plot. The movie's not high art or anything, but seeing a fucking tank smash a bunch of cars is pretty bad ass and so is the like 20 or 30 minute climax of the movie, which is a pretty damn awesome action sequence that I plan on watching again.

I'm not sure why these movies seem to be getting better reviews though, as I thought most critics would not forgive how bad everything other than the movie's driving scenes are. Either they are lowering their standards or I'm just missing something, because take away the jaw dropping car chases and stunts and you have a fairly mediocre movie.

EDIT: Just a random thought, has Michelle Rodriguez ever been in a movie where she's not playing the exact same character? And for that matter, she always feels like the cheap, B option for "bad ass chick tomboy". I'd rather pay the extra cash for an Angelina Jolie or Scarlet Johanssen personally. Just saying.

I'm just going to go ahead and admit it, this movie is a masterpiece. I loved every minute of it. My dad purchased it for me earlier and boy am I glad I got him too. Best 2 hours and 9 minutes I've spent so far :D Now all I need is the rest of the miyazaki movies, wouldn't mind watching spirited away, again once I find it...

I've seen this show more times than I can count, but this is the first time I've ever seen it outdoors with the Space Needle in the background.

I've seen that one. Maybe 15 years ago. I had the TV on and it randomly came out an Encore channel. I did one of those "What the hell is this?" but then you end up watching the entire movie. I remember liking it, it's been such a long time though, I remember little about it. It pops into my head every so often that I should watch it again.

Who is this Miyazaki? I should watch other movies that he did?

Miyazaki is the guy that has a ton of films with studio Gilhbi(not correct spelling I know) the more famous I know of and need to watch or rewatch that he's done is:

- My neighbor totoro
- Spirited away
- Howl's Moving Castle
- ponyo
- Kiki's Delievery service
and of course
- Princess Mononoke
- Secret world of Arietty

(and i know that's missing a ton of movies but those are ones i know of and need to watch or something)

That said what movies he's done that I've watched at one point or another are amazing(which is sprited away, kiki's delivery service, and princess mononoke). They are wonderfully drawn and the story is great too. Don't know if it's true for the others but i think both princess, and spirited away are long movies so make sure you have plenty of time for it if you decide to watch them :?

Are you being facetious? Miyazaki is the Walt Disney of Japan. His animated features are consistently top quality, and often feature an environmental message. I encourage any fan of animation to watch all his movies.

Some (but not all) of Miyazaki's finest films:
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind - A princess of a post-apocalyptic tribe must defend her people from an encroaching army, monstrous giants, and stampeding hordes of giant bugs.
Castle in the Sky - A Boy goes on an adventure with a mysterious girl, sky pirates, and evil government agents in a fantastical flying castle populated with rusty steampunk robots.
My Neighbor Totoro - Whimsical story of two sisters who move into an old house in the woods that may still be inhabited by spirits. This movie is a little cutesy, and introduced notable characters like Bus Cat and the titular Totoro.
Porco Rosso - An Italian WWI pilot is transformed into a pig by his own selfishness. Porco evades the Italian authorities while dogfighting with his brash american rival and flying circles around sky pirates. Yes, Miyazaki loves sky pirates.
Princess Mononoke - The last Prince of a dying clan is cursed by a monstrous spirit. While questing for a cure to his curse, Prince Ashitaka is drawn into a conflict between a wild girl raised by wolves and a lady who uses gun violence to protect women and lepers at the expense of the forest. This movie is notable for its sympathetic villain. Themes include sword and scorcery vs guns and nature vs industry.
Spirited Away - a bratty girl stumbles upon an abandoned amusement park, and finds herself trapped in a magical land of spirits. Only through personal growth can she save her parents and free herself from her contract with the evil witch.
Howls Moving Castle - a selfish magician would rather break hearts than let himself be drafted into a world at war. The girl who loves him cannot tell him she has had her youth stolen by the rude witch who pursues Howl.
Ponyo - A little boy saves a fish, but this fish is actually a mermaid princess. The love between a mermaid and a boy proves disastrous when the full might and fury of the ocean hits the land to look for her.

Honestly that's not far off. Everyone of them that i've seen that he's had some part in are generally some of the best movies I've ever seen. I've yet to see a good chunk of them, but I've only been anywhere near introduced to them thanks to pre-2007 cartoon network(since honestly they don't show the kind of stuff they used to show that introduced me to that stuff now, especially now that toonami is on nights where I need some sleep  )

My nieces LOVE Ponyo (the oldest turns 4 next month and starts preschool soon). I picked up a copy years and YEARS ago from Village Video before they went out of business. Really wanna get them Kiki's Delivery Service.
